Could be a stupid question
Discussion
I was at bell and covil earlier considering an Elise,
and ive seen alot of people convert there's to either a s/c ,turbo or engine transplant
so why is it i haven't come across one with a Volvo T5 engine? there cheap and powerful?
also with a s/c conversion, i also havent seen any procharger/vortech style s/c's there cheap and powerful.
sorry if this is a stupid question its just been at the back of my mind all day
Thanks Alex

my guess (and thats all it is) is the size and weight of the engine, it may fit but sat all the way out back it may not do wonders for the handling. must be the same reason why the vw group 1.9 diesel has never been used, as think of the torque and MPG!
We run a Skoda Fabia VRS as our main car with the 130 bhp vw diesel engine. I've always wondered what the torque would be like in an Elise, especially with the 170 bhp ecu upgrade. And probably nearer to 70 mpg.Scuffers said:
T5 engine has 5 cyls in a line, how do you propose to fit that in?
As for a dismal, what the hell would you put a less powerful engine in the Elise? torque means nothing without RPM's to go with it, power is were it's at...
not at all less powerfull, my elise s has 139bhp, my cupra standard has 160bhp and revo'd had 208.As for a dismal, what the hell would you put a less powerful engine in the Elise? torque means nothing without RPM's to go with it, power is were it's at...
the rasoning for me would be that the elise is my everyday car and is used on the motorway for 20 mile runs daily. i get around 40mpg from it, i used to get around 48 mpg from the cupra, so if the elise would give around 54 mpg plus still be fun and not hurt handling it would be worth it.

you want to add a s
t load of weight, complexity, etc to a lightweight sports car for the same of a couple of mpg?it's a sportscar man, not a econosadbox!
that aside, a decent efficient petrol engine will do as well MPG with some real performance.
Kazsti - whether you realise it or not, by owning an Elise you have one of the best real world sports cars on the planet.
It may not be the fastest - but in all other respects it is right up there with the worlds best sporting cars.
Adding a Diesel engine could give you lots more mpg and more torque - that much is pretty obvious, however by doing so you would destroy the whole feel of the car. It needs a free revving engine.
You would have a world class sports car that didn't feel like a sports car at all.
A better bet would be buying or creating a well handling Diesel hatchback.
I think that transplanting an engine into an Elise should only be done to create more performance!
That,s my opinion for what it's worth.

No I do not want to add the weight. I believe I have already pointed out that it will ruin the handling. I'm just saying that it is a shame it can't be used due to this reason as otherwise the charachteristics of the engine IMO would suit the car
#sorry,
if you trying to tell us that a VAG Tdi engine has the right characteristics for a sportscar, you really need to review that.
good as the TDi's are, they have way more inertia, slower throttle response, limited rev range, etc,
you think this is suited to a sportscar?
No one is saying that the VAG TDI engine is suitable for a sports car, it is just an interesting thought with regard to the light weight of the Lotus, the low down torque and the MPG. Some of us like to think out of the box once in a while. It helps when things are quiet as the obviously are. Some people are just too precious at times with regards to their brand of car.
Not sure how the diesel argument started, seems like a fairly good idea but not for me,
Any one have any info on bolting a centrifugal S/C on a Lotus Elise?
Also the T5 engine is 300+ bhp for not alot more weight, im sure if you did the bhp:ton it would be worth it,
I just wanted to know why people haven't done it, and if it would be possible, if its to wide, than that's my question answered,
Thanks
Alex

will you stop rabbiting on about the T5 engine? have you ever seen one? how big it is?
and yes, peope have bolted centrifugal S/C to Elises for years, turbo technics were one of the first over 10 years ago.

Could you link me some build/info pages on the centrifugal s/c so i can see please?

Did you not get laid last night or some thing?
this is normal for scuffers
Edit - for clarity I didn't mean it is normal for scuffers not to get laid, I have no idea about scuffers sex life, nor do I have any real desire to find out.
