Just in case you run into trouble with the French police who want to take away your driving license, it might be worth picking up an International Permit at £4 a pop from the RAC, which acts as your license.

So at least you can keep your real license, and once Mr Plod has gone, can drive your car again...

If it is like the International Drivers Permits issued in the US, then it will not work. I have mine in front of me, and it is only valid IN CONJUNCTION with your national driving permit. It basically translates my driving permit into 17 langauges - says I am authorized to drive a passenger car and a motorcycle, gives my DOB and so on... But is not valid unless accompanied by my national drivers license.

Not sure how the RAC one works, but I'd check this first!

Didn't realise that it was in conjunction, in much the same way the photo card requires the paper license.

However I figure that at just £4 you show them the permit, chances are they might accept it, if not you have to provide your proper license...
