My 40D has been suffering CF card issues for a while now, so I sent it in to Fixation. It seems it needs a new main PCB at a total cost of £279 frown

Aside of it being very disappointing that such an expensive bit of kit has broken in this way, I wonder if it is worth getting it fixed at all or whether I should simply convince myself that it needs to be replaced with a 7D nuts

You had most of the right words in the first version.....

....not necessarily in the right order.

I suspect that even if everyone on this forum told you to get it fixed, you'd still ignore us and buy a 7D... I know a rhetoric question when I see one!

Just gutting that the 40D is probably worth about £400 tops second hand, and it will cost nearly 3/4 of that to get it back in a working condition. If it goes wrong again...

I can only suggest that you divide the cost of the 40D by the months you've had it and console yourself that (((hopefully))) it's been good value.

That's how I value kit these days.........it's all sadly too "disposable".

Now about spending your money - is there soemthing more expensive than a 7D you should be fixating on?

Option A) If cash is tight then go for the repair, it'll be 100% on the money after Fixation have looked after it.

Option B) If cash is not so tight, plough the repair cash towards either a 7D or 5D Mk2

You know you want to do option B smile

Yes. Yes I do. Not a 5DII though, just too much wonga!

You'll not be too far off, if I decide the Tuscan's needing a new owner, having just come off the 'phone from Mr Agger......

Anyway, that's by the by (and don't let everyone know, they'll all want one).

And you don't need to lesten to me 'cos I know nothing about post-1985 Canon, but

1) your potential repair isn't claimable on any insurance is it?
2) opportunity cost is newer/"better technology" - but the 40D actually isn't that old is it?
3) however good Fixation will be (and from their reputation it should be A1) it's resale will never recoup the cost, will it?
4).......

[trails off.....]

No - irrelevant - you know you want the 7D!!!

Ah, indeed it is Mr Agger who has the delectable Chim I have my eye on. A trip to Mr Lloyd and his good friend Ms TSB might well be in order. I don't think the cost of the repair is enough to justify the excess plus likely premium hike to bother claiming on the insurance though.

James - for a moment there I was torn.

Get the deposit down on that bloomin Chim now (the 4 litre in Imperial, isn't it?) - mention to James that I now need some commission - and then you'll need a decent camera to take pictures of it. you cannot have one without the other.

Dreadfully O/T now but

Hubba. Have asked him for some pictures of the interior. I will be hung, drawn, quartered and finely diced if I buy it. Especially if I don't sell something else first. Life is indeed too short.

Similar issue with my 400D.

But, 50D, 7D, or new glass and a cheap body. Going for new glass. And in fact, hoping to pick up a s/h 400D for £150. But still in love with the 7D though...

The plot thickens here. I've got the camera back from Fixation unrepaired and the report sheet states:

"CF pin bent have replaced but this has damaged main PCB"

Doesn't this basically mean "whilst fixing the fault we broke something else"?
