Government Petitions
Discussion
No 10 has had this petition system online for a while now: http://petitions.number10.gov.uk
Out of all the petitions I've signed I can't think of 1 that they have actually implemented.
Does anyone have any examples of petitions that they have taken notice of?
(not holding my breath)

I think the purpose of this site has more to do with giving the electorate an illusion of power.
When a person feels strongly about an issue it provides a satisfaction that 'you've done something about it'.
This can reduce the motivation to take other action.
This is advantageous to the government. It is far cheaper to send an email in response to a petitioner than to Police a demonstration.
You always get a patronizing explanation why they're going to do exactly what they originally intended.
But not for some time. This often allows consultation periods to expire, or reduce numbers on marches.
By making support for issues more defuse it makes it appear less. This enhances their control.

You may not be the only one who's having this problem. I scrolled through the guestbook on Grumpyoldsod.com and found this.Out of all the petitions I've signed I can't think of 1 that they have actually implemented.

"Visitor Comments: So not only is Brown a
(did you see his fancy outfit for Afghanistan?
impressive and a masterful demo of his "courage") but he's got his oiks into the epetitions site rejecting any that take issue with his branding of people who dont follow his particular beliefs, ie, global b
warming.I refer of course to the one eyed oafs latest display of "tough guy" posturing whereby he calls the electorate names, such as "deniers" "anti science" and "flat earthers".
Anyway, back to the epetitions site.
They keep changing reasons for rejecting petitions, such as saying that its libellous, defamatory or false ( huh? me? never! all i did was repeat browns charge and demanded an apology) so they rejected that one.
I resubmitted it with the majority of the stuff removed and rejected it again they did.
This time they said it duplicated another petition...does
not. They just dont like having their slug of a leader put in a position of having to back down in the face of public opinion.
Too bad, public opinion will condemn him to the
in the new year and i'll be one of those taking a
on him and his party of communist slags."Edited by Langweilig on Sunday 10th January 22:52
