I need to change the main carpet and this time I want decent underlay, not the 'free' stuff that squashes flat in a few years.

I've had a quote which mentions 'Treadmore' and I've found it at www.tradepriced.co.uk/duralay_crumb_underlay.html

Will this fit the bill please? Or should I ask for something else?

Fit the underlay and grippers yourself, you will then be able to use the money saved to buy some better quality stuff.

Interesting idea. I guess underlay is just cut to size and laid on the floor (tacked on the stairs?) and the gripper rods are already in place.

I think they also tack (with staple gun) down the underlay to stop it creeping.

I used Duralay Air Tred 10mm from Abby Carpets under my recently carpeted bedroom. Seems to be very good quality for the price and, an excellent service.

Concrete floor downstairs with vinyl tiles glued on top, so staple gun no good I fear.

It raises the possibilty of buying everything seperately including a fitter, but I wonder if there are too many unforeseen things to go wrong... ultimately I want a good job not a cheaper bad one.

Personally, I would save money by purchasing the underlay oneself, then ask the carpet supplier to provide the fitting.

I'd say supply the underlay and grippers(screwfix) yourself. We've supplied for years on the recommendation of the fitter and they're more than happy to just fit, and no , it doesn't cost any more to fit.

We've always gone for the best underlay we can afford and it does seem to make a hell of a difference over the lifetime of a carpet. Having said that, I wouldn't know what to recommend.

Just use Combilux Royale on a (still hurting) 5.5k John Lewis re-carpet. Very nice it is too and the house is also warmer as a result.

Hi Guys,

Just had carpet fitted in my house yesterday, I bought cloud 9 cirrus (9 mm one). Paid fitter £30 more to remove 90sqm of old stuff and put new stuff down.

It's amazing, so please with it. House looks a million dollars. Now need to sort out the kitchen.

Amusingly enough, I found newspaper from 15th November 1971 in the box room upstairs. Mental!!!

Cheers

Sunil

Yep, we did the same. We fitted the underlay ourselves (well I did!) they just came along and fitted the carpet on top. The main gripe I think they have is if the rooms are inaccesible or still have furniture in them...

The difference in the quality of the underlay is noticeable.
