Sorry about my ignorance but will my nikon 5000d auto focus with a 50mm f1.8d af nikkor lens, or does it have to have vr on the lens. Thanks Cliff.

Does the camera have a little screwdriver blade-type thingy on the body lens mount at about the 7 o'clock position? If it does, then yes, if not, then no.

Nothing to do with VR, that technology is aimed at reducing camera shake, not focus. The 5000D doesn't have an AF motor built into the camera, so needs newer lenses with an AF motor built in to autofocus. They will however manual focus.

Look for the Nikon AF-S lenses (with a built in motor), or Sigmas HSM. There's probably a few more as well. Expect to pay more (possibly twice as much) for a lens with built in motor, but they will focus quicker than the older lenses on an AF motor, and are usually newer designs, better optimised for digital sensors.

Thank's very much for you'r reply Vx, i'm happy to do the focus side of things by hand but just get a bit confused by what camera will do with what lens, all will become clear in time with a bit of study though.Cheers Cliff.
