Yes sir, I'll get someone to you between 8 and 6 on saturday.
Oh thanks.

i have quite bad arthritis and told them this so eventully they said they might cme tomorrow. I just fail to see why someone thats over 60 should be a priority considering the health of a lot of old codgers is quite good.
No heating in this weather surely is a priority, still on the plus when the pipes freeze and burst we'll get a redecorated house and kitchen for gratsis

Waste of space.
Had cover for three years at £36 a month. Had cause to call them out five times and four occasions they tried to get out doing the work.
Came to a head when they refused to mend a minor leak as it was slightly below the floor line. Took a plumber mate of mine 20 mins to fix!
Most of the major stuff should be covered by your home insurance anyway so stick the £36 in a savings account!

I'm freezing my nuts off right now as my boiler went tits up last night.
However, called the boiler manufacturer - Potterton - and there's a guy coming on Saturday. I thought this was pretty impressive as the demand right now must be immense.
A flat rate (but pricey) call out which covers all parts (we'll see if that's true whe the guy turns up) and all work covered for a year.
I did have a BG maintenance plan, but as they failed to turn up to do a service twice in a row, I gave up on them.
Upon reflection, however, I really should have got someone out to do those missed services. Just hoping the pipes don't freeze before Saturday because in this three year old house they're not insulated, but that's another story...

If you're really that concerned you should just accept s
t happens and either relocate your better half to somewhere warmer or pay the call-out for a plumber. I know it's not what you're paying for but needs must.
I pay 600 quid a year full cover on this house, 600 on my flat and 600 on a 2nd house. Thats a lot of money they are getting for my peace of mind. Those 20 quid fires are great until the heater wire breaks and sets fire to the carpet underneath.

As for the other stuff, err put the heater on a solid surface, spare tiles, piece of wood - whatever. Sounds like you're suffering some kind of metal paralysis brought on by subzero temps.
We get our (oil) boiler serviced by a local guy - circa £70 a year. A couple of years ago just before Xmas, it broke one evening (reset button control thingy).
We phoned our local man next day, he was there same day to have a look. He didn't have a part (it's a 30-year old boiler), but turned up next day with it. All done for £120.
I try to put as little business to the big national companies as possible.

£600! Blimey, what the heck do you get for that? The standard cover is a few quid per month. Some friends of ours had their boiler breakdown on Christmas Eve a couple of years ago and BG said they couldn't come for 4 days and then couldn't get parts for 2 weeks. They haven't bothered renewing it since.
How can they deal with people as priority if you can't get through? And let me guess, the number you're on hold on isn't a free call?

well its close to 50 pcm, full electrics cover, boiler, plumbing, pipes etc and it has paid dividends twice in the past having had a new boiler and pipes replaced.
As for the local guy, yes I could take that run too but the problem is when renting a flat to tennants its just paid and forgot, any problems they call BG themselves. Here at home I take the view that whilst house insurance covers me in the eventuality of damage from a fault that I'd rather also not have to pay the ££ for a new boiler or repiping etc.

I think I'd rather stash £600 away each year, and then pay out if need be. We've been in the current house 4 and a half years. 30 year old boiler has had 3 services paid by us, a new motor; a new control switch; and a photocell along with the occasional jet. Total outlay in that time is about £510. I'd have about £2200 in the kitty by now by saving £600 a year.
Plus the guy I use is a one-man-band, so eager to maintain a customer base, not f
k 'em off.
Plus the guy I use is a one-man-band, so eager to maintain a customer base, not f
k 'em off.yes you are right one could do that but combi boilers are usually an all or nothing affair, when they fail they typically fail big not small. I used to work for a company called Shoreheat which supplies pretty much all the countrys plumbing and heating spares to trade and the utlities so I look at it like this. Upstairs I have a boiler where the condensor has leaked out into the flue stack this hints that the diaphram has gone (cheap) or more likely a fault in the exchange itself (basially the boiler).
I'd had BG cover litterally 2 weeks at the flat when the fairly new boiler burst, entire heat exchanger swapped out. If I had required a new boiler of the same type (at the twist your arm rates BG and other plumbers employ) talking 2k to replace. Even if I went direct to my then employers i'd have had to fork out over 1300 quid for the replacement boiler.
Older boilers, whilst parts are harder to find, are typically a lot less complicated and if something fails its usually only a relatively simple replacement. Combi's and its all or nothing
