.. I don't know what to go for. I was brought up on a diet of Nikon F1s and F2s - photomic and otherwise, Contax RTS1 and 2, Bronica and Hasselblad at work but gave it all up. Still have a tatty RTS2 but went digital with a Canon Eos 300D when they came out. OK, it works and it is adequate for what it is but it is very frustrating in use. So, I want a newer, more manual like one. I will stick with Canon but am at a loss to really understand the range. I photograph landscapes, abstracts, motor sport, trains, planes and stuff but am not interested in macro or people. I have no intention of ever trying to be published (again). What I want is the kind of control you had on the old pro cameras but I know this doesn't exist any more.

So, new, I can have an 7D, a 50D or a 5D. Used I can find a 1Ds or a 5D Mk1. The full frame models have a certain appeal but do I need 21MB (5D) images really? Can the photographers of PH point me in the right direction, or put me off anything in the wrong direction.

Ta.

What, what, what?

Whatever gave you that idea? I was bought up on Hasselblads, Bronicas and F's too, and my current Nikon DSLR does everything they did and a lot more.

Having just replaced my 300D I know what you mean - no control over metering modes etc. with it at all. I've just replaced it with a 7D which I'm finding absolutely fantastic. You mention you like shooting sports etc. which is where the 7D fits in nicely - very fast AF, lots of choices on AF point selection (grouped, expanded, the other usual) and you benefit from the crop factor.

Well they will all be a huge improvement on the 300D.

Almost instant operation, preview, much faster shooting & buffer clearing etc.

I moved from a 350D to a 7D a few months ago and I am very happy. Not quite 5D image quality but still enough to print a 4ftx3ft image at 100dpi if you need to... Operation and controls are ace, Noise is very film like and very well controlled.

For landscapes and potraits the 5D will be better, but not by a huge amount, it 'wins' on high ISO noise and DOF control (larger sensor = shallower DOF) - 7D creams it on everything else.

7D tho is rather complex & I think it pays to read the manual a few times.

50D isnt a bad body either (lacks video if thats an issue).

I literally meant the controls - you know - speed dial on top and aperture on the lens...............

nail on head there- the lack of an iris ring on modern photographic lenses really bugs me, im forever reaching for a ring that isnt there, and then have to remeber what dial to twiddle, which is in a different place depending on make and model...

Ah... OK... you still have the control, but the dials have moved... not a problem surely? Aston Martins have hand brakes in the correct place, but I don't mind driving cars that have them on the left! wink

Try adjusting between no handbrake - Merc - in the middle - GT3 - and on the right - 944 - on an ad hoc basis.........
