As for whether PS3 or 360 - if you want to play online, get the one your mates have.
What's the deal with HDMI ports on the X360 though? Wasnt the Elite the only one that had a pukka HDMI port? Though I am aware that Microsoft revamped the internals recently though.
Oh, and just to throw my hat into the ring here, I seriously think that Microsoft have created a major force with the Xbox brand and Live online arena. However, I think they have taken their eye off the ball in 2010. Project Natal (or whatever dodgy name it will have) looks interesting but its not ready for mainstream yet - just look how long it took the Wii to get established....
Nah, what I think is that there is a big dearth of exclusives for X360 at the moment. Yes, there have been a couple of big releases (Forza being an obvious one), but they haven't been big sellers, or more accurately big short term sellers that get people to buy the console. The recent price cut for the lower cost units seem to have helped a little, but certainly the base consoles are not shifting in the numbers that Microsoft want or need. Its not a case that this is the death of Xbox, but more a case that they risk letting Sony and Nintendo to catch up in the next 6-12 months. Sony on the other hand has a bundle of new releases that are exclusive to the PS3 as well as the dual release blockbusters; well it makes it seem that they have the better platform.
Maybe I am wrong, but in the past, the fastest to discount heavily is usually the one that goes first - Sega Dreamcast, Nintendo Gamecube etc. The recent re-shell of the PS3 lifted sales massively (as well as the price cut) and though they don't shift the units they want, its better than it ever has been. There are still more X360 consoles out there than the PS3, but Sony is catching pretty quickly and without exclusives to drive the console, it looks like Microsoft might be in a different position this time next year.
Of course, this could be totally wrong and Microsoft has something up its sleve - who knows, but its going to be an interesting year! Mature platforms with developers that have started to stretch their potential. Add to this a broadband infrastructure for content delivery and you have a pretty interesting time coming up. Either console is going to be interesting, but I would go for the PS3 at the moment
P.S Oh, and the PS3 is near silent and doesn't break down as much as the Xbox!

It's all about titles. Consoles have historically been driven by games. The number of quality titles directly affects it's success. If you look back at all the failed consoles, one common theme is a lack of developers making decent games. The Gamecube and Dreamcast couldn't compete with the PS2 and Xbox in that respect (along with the fact that they couldn't play DVDs which were just getting popular at the time).i have both, my Ps3 very Very rarely even gets turned on. i have tried to play online with the PS3 and its fine if you want to play by yourself.. but if you want any group of mates to play.. xbox all the way. Party chat is pure genius!
the Ps3 is probably the better console tech wise. but for sheer useability the xbox wins for me!
