Hi All,

Looking at getting a loft conversion done as we need an extra bedroom, does anyone have any recommendations for companies in the Kingston area (Surrey)

cheers

I'm not in your area so I can't recommend anyone. However, whoever you do go for make double sure they're aware and comply with the current builing regs. Also, don't take the buider's word that it's all up to scratch. I had a loft conversion done and the builder told me it was all signed off and 'on file' with the council. It was only when I phoned up that they told me that they still needed to do a final inspection before it could be signed off. When they came to do this inspection there were several areas that were not compliant. As I had already decorated and finished the room the prospect of ripping it to pieces wasn't very appealing.

Ultimately it's your responsiblility to make sure it complies with current regs so make sure you're in contact with the Builing Control officer who's handling your build. Remember, they're there to help you.

We're just doing the final little bits of snagging on our loft conversion (in Ewell, so Kingston probably isn't too far for them) before the building inspector does his final inspection, and then have a ground floor extension starting as soon as the ground has thawed out enough for the mini-digger to break through it! hehe

When I was going through the initial process of looking for builders, I had 8 companies come in to quote. That immediately dropped to a shortlist of two. Some sent spotty oik sales children in nylon suits. One was the MD, and whilst he clearly knew his stuff, he was such an arrogant tosser I'd have ended up lamping him before the job was done.

Of the other two, one was PHer Dean Hays (D14 AYS), and the other was a company called Hooks Building Services.

In the end, Hooks edged it, simply because they'd just finished a very similar job for one of my wife's friends on time, on budget and she was chuffed to bits with it. Dean also came across as very professional though, and was highly recommended by others on here at the time.

I'll PM you Dave at Hooks details if you want, although be aware he's already fully booked until August. Alternatively, drop Dean a line through here.
