Does anyone know of a good firm that rebuilds rear differentials for RWD cars? Has anyone experienced a rear diff failure and is it even worth rebuilding.
Thanks in advance.

Um currently on the fourth diff in the V8S. First two were standard, third one was uprated, current one is uprated and toughened. Diff failure was fairly uneventful. Yes they can be rebuilt, unless you've gone right through the back of the bearings or blown the casing. My rebuilds and upgrades were done by "Bernie" the local diff/gearbox expert, arranged via Tower View.

How much did it cost or does it vary considerably depending on how bad the diff is? Is Tower View your TVR garage?

Thanks and regards!

Yes Tower View look after the V8S. It goes in every 6000 miles or so which means three or four times a year for scheduled servicing, plus the odd repair.

Only had a few diff rebuilds so not enough to start predicting general prices. Original diff on the V8S was a strange viscous affair a bit like Hydratrack. I thought it was cr*p and utterly hated it but assumed it was just worn out. The new one was just as bad though . Think it cost around £600 for the rebuild plus a couple of hundred labour. More conventional friction plate diffs like the non-Hydrotrack Griffiths and Chimaeras use may be cheaper. The first uprated diff cost a couple of thousand but that included all new uprated CV joints, custom machined half shafts plus entirely new innards for the diff. Dave seems to enjoy this sort of challenge and I'm pretty sure he under-charged me for the time he must have spent sourcing all the non-standard parts and trial-fitting and so on - but I'm not going to argue. It worked a treat and lasted well but eventually I cracked several teeth kerb-hopping it. The recent rebuild was £600 plus labour again, although the extra hardening process they used accounts for some of this and a concentional diff rebuild could well be cheaper.

Hope this helps, if you want a more accurate idea you could give them a call? 0208 452 6922.
