Today I got the chance to visit Aldeburgh and visit this highly rated Chippy. I had Haddock & Chips for the bargain price of £4.40, without doubt the best fish and chips I've ever had in my life.
The chips were fantastic, not at all greasy and the fish was lovely with a superb golden batter which was light and crispy.
Bought my Fish & Chips and when and sat on the seafront to eat them. It was bloody cold but a cracking way to bring in the new year and round off the seasons festivities.

Fantastic! The things here that made it taste so good is the salty sea breeze and the cold, so making you even more appreciative of the flavours and warmth. This is why a huge freshly caught fish at Whitby circa 1980 eaten on the pier with a few pints inside you and a cold wind blowing off the North Sea is better than anything our children will ever experience.
Oh, if only I had a time machine now.

Sure I heard somewhere that the people that own the shop next to the White Hart had bought the chippy across the road. Used to be called the Golden Galleon iirc. They should both be as good as each other now! Have fond memories of sitting on the beach with plenty of cod and chips, bottle of white wine, glorious sunshine and being surrounded by folk dressed in formal evening wear all having a fish supper before going to Snape for a concert. However, which chippy? As you're looking at the sea, the one on the right is the better one. (Of an embarrassment of riches since both are excellent.)
ETA. The chippy on the beach at Dunwich is pretty good too.

I believe you are correct, we'll be down there next weekend.A word of warning though, the chippy half way down the main drag, the one that's upstairs, don't like small children. They won't let them in during peak season, but as it was late winter when we visited, we were allowed. It was still busy though!

I should be visiting the UK later this year (for the first time in six years), is fish and chips at 4.40 really a bargain!? I know there are a lot of potatoes in NZ, and there is a lot of sea for 4 million people - but locally a medium sized fish and chips is 1.20. 4.40! is any take away cheaper? if not I could be going hungry.The chips were fantastic, not at all greasy and the fish was lovely with a superb golden batter which was light and crispy.

LOL - i did the same thing yesterday.

It was the Aldeburgh Fish & Chip Shop as opposed to the Golden Galleon which is in the middle of town. The one I went to is on a corner and is painted mid blue.the one "on the right" as you face the see shut early unfortunately (3pm), so the other one had to do. Still, top quality locally caught fish.
The joys of the A12 back to London await :P

Tom Aikens place (now closed - wonder why
) near my office in SW3 charged £12 for a tiny piece of gurnard (a fish used as lobster bait until Rick Stein popularised it) and about 10 chips. Admittedly, all was delicious, but £12?

Yup, about £6 for take-way fish & chips in my local area and the quality decidedly downhill from that at Aldeburgh et al mentioned up the thread (have been there too and have happy memories).England is bloody expensive now - gets cheaper the further north you go as a rule though so a lot depends on where you're off to.
Yikes, six quid for a single portion? As the pound is somewhat low in value that's NZ$14 - a kilo of rump steak, 13 litres of diesel, fish and chips for four, 2 litres of chateau cardboard, 2 large pizzas (with student card!).
