Canon 20D Questions
Discussion
I have been Looking at Canon 400D's and 1000D's though have recently been offered a 20D with a Canon EF 35 - 105mm and a Canon EF 50mm lens 1:1.8, with loads of extras (memory, bag, tripod, batteries, filters etc) for £300ish
Is this a good deal i know its a older model but how does it compare ?

Sounds okay-ish including the lenses.
Some good comparison prices here:

My view is it's better to go for the xxD rather than the xxxD series, even if you buy one generation older. Better build quality, more control, better sealing. eg, getting a 30D instead of a 400.

I should add that I do swallow my own medicine - I use a 40D have upgraded from a 30D, though the 50D was available.
Next.. 5D and the full frame!
The 50mm 1.8 is great lens, worth £50 second hand on its own I would have thought - but would recommend starting with just that lens and then playing with the zoom afterwards

My 20D was used in <35oC to >40oC temperatures, including being thoroughly drenched on 15+ occasions for nearly 4 years in which times it took around 700,000 shots without issue (only once in that entire time did I need to clean the sensor - after a very dusty WRC event I was covering).
The only fault I ever had with it was the generic E99 code, which I recovered from by simply using a PCB eraser on the lens electrical contacts on the body itself (obviously with strong vacuum in place too and holding it open side down to prevent particles inside the body as much as possible).
Great cam and were I still doing the motorsport work for mags it would still be #1 camera, but these days the random shooting favours the Sony R1 and Canon 400D's I have too.

IQ wise its pretty good, Noise above ISO 800 is going to be rough compared to modern cameras and resolution is way down , but plenty for A3 prints (I've printed A0 canvases off my 350D, sameish sensor), think its down a touch on Dynamic range on modern sensors too. But I didnt change my 350D realy because of the results, more the operation - the 20D has far less issues there.Is this a good deal i know its a older model but how does it compare ?
The viewfinder and screen are OK, it does 5fps with pretty decent AF, nice ergonomic body and 100k actuation mtf. Cracking piece of kit.
Totaly unsure of that lens, 35-105? sounds like a way old film kit lens and IMO wya way not wide enough for a crop body.
50/1.8 is a classic.
Overall sounds like a good deal if its been looked after.
I started (D-SLR) with a 20D and still have it as a back-up to my 40D. IMHO the 40D's only real advantages are:-
- frame rate;
- larger rear LCD;
- sensor self-clean.
...so I still use the 20D quite regularly.
By contrast, my Dad's gone the 300D-450D route, and IMHO it depends what you're looking for - for motorsport an xxD is invaluable, for portraits and reportage stuff an xxxD will be quite enough, and the smaller size/lighter weight of it might be a benefit. But overall I'd recommend the 20D over all the xxxD's up to and including the 400D - the 450D (aside from being plastic not magnesium body) has pretty much all the 20D's got, plus sensor-clean as well.

Out of the 3 choices I'd go for the 20D rather than a 400D or a 1000D (which is aimed at the lowest end of the market, below the 450/500D). As others have said it's got all the features most will want, and it's a lot faster than the 10D it replaced (was a bit clunky). Finally upgraded from my 300D the other day to a 7D, like night and day (as you'd expect after 6/7 years), unfortunately it's going back on Monday due to a mark on the focus screen that just won't shift
