Nicasil Problem and Engine change....
Discussion
Predominatley for Silverbackmike!
A lot of the 2.8 and 4.4 engines suffer from bore wear due to too much sulphur in our fuel.
To see if the engine has been "cured" is quite simple. On the n/s of the engine just below the starter motor will be a 5mm allen key/bolt thing (you know what i mean), signifying "cure" done.
If the engine HASN'T been "cured" there will simply be a hole.
BMW will happily cure them upto 100,000 miles (and a bit over) and providing they have a service history...
Your local dealer will run a simple engine test, fill out some forms, send the to BMW GB and await a response.
If no history BMW will still contribute something toward the job. (but i never said that)
Hope this helps you all...
Seems to come up quite often.

what do you reckon they would say to a 132K miles M60 engine.....FULL bmsh?
worth a try. we fill a form in send it off, they give us an answer.
i'll double check which engines but i was certain it was 2.8 and 4.4...
id check today but im seriously ill with a hangover designed by satan himself
The affected engines were:
M52 1995 - 1998: 320/ 323/ 328/ 520/ 523/ 528/ 728 (2.2, 2.5 and 2.8 litres)
M60 1992 - 1996: 530/ 540/ 730/ 740 (3.0 and 4.0 litres)
All others including the M62 4.4 V8 had Alusil blocks.
Nikasil is not usually a problem anymore. Fact is the fuel that caused the problem has not been available in the UK for five years now, so any problems should have already shown up.
I have a 130k E34 540i touring on the original block with no problems at all.
