I saw an advert for the WWF today using the plight of Polar Bears and why we must help to save them. Why do they continually ram home the message of "saving the Polar Bears". Numbers have grown massively in the last 30 years, they don't live on icebergs and in case anyone didn't know Inuit Indians are allowed to offer 14 hunting expeditions to rich Americans at $65,000 a pop every year to track down and shoot dead a bear. To me that doesn't sound like a species in decline. In fact they are spreading out further, the first Polar Bear seen in Iceland for 20 years was (guess what) shot dead to protect the public last year.

What next, save the Camel because it's getting colder?

PB population has risen from approx 5000 in 1959 to approx 25,000 today, the only reason PB's are migrating is to find food as suprisingly their food source hasnt risen by the same 500%

The thing that annoyed me the most was the fact that the WWF were advertising about them.

Here's a video on it - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fs37-Pr5SHY

How can a society that takes itself seriously produce such crap?

I remember a story from a while ago when some whales got trapped in the ice near the North Pole. The USA and the USSR worked together to free them, but in doing so, they denied the PBs a rich and huge source of food. Not sure but they might have had to guard the whales against the PBs while the op was under way. The media was all aboot the whales, and while I do like whales and do not believe they should be hunted to near extinction by man, I was uneasy that the PBs were being pushed out from their natural place here.

Does that look like a happy polar bear to you? Well, does it?

It's a bloody sad bear, that's what it is. And do you know why it's scared?

Because thanks to evil and selfish Mankind, it can't swim any longer!!

Send me £500 and I shall provide it with water wings.

Thanking you.

It seems that Polar bear numbers are on the up from years ago because limits have been put on how many we shoot.

What are you on about?! It's positively beaming from ear to ear, waiting for the person off camera to lob another fish in its direction.
Mind you, the only reason it's perched on that ice sculpture, is because they've weighted the ice down with an anchor!
Once the show is over, they'll raise the anchor, the ice will break the surface once more, and off it'll waddle to the trailer, awaiting the 4:30 performance.

I tell you what, let's put 50 eco warriors (worriers?) in a Polar Bear enclosure for a night so they can cuddle up to the fluffy wuffy nice little cutsie wutsie bear.

Then in the morning the survivors can be let back out to go to hospital.

They chose the Polar Bear due to a picture, and I guess that was their mistake, because they forgot to notice the numbers are increasing due to the fact that man has stopped shooting them in such large numbers. IIRC in canada now they dart the bears and then airlift them back up North. But the bears keep coming back because they get well fed before they are flown out !

I'll have you know that a 'Ghibli' is a particular type of bear that I'm selflessly trying to introduce to North London.

FS I was looking at this thread with the pictures and my little boy said we need to adopt one because the ice is melting. Jesus fecking Christ. Have a look at this article on agitprop aimed at children http://wattsupwiththat.com/2009/12/23/unbearable-g...
Needless to say I explained that it wasn't so but that confused him.

Jesus, talk about a life of Reilly! A good feed, bit of a kip, then dropped off home again.......sounds like something a few members here are very familiar with at this time of year.
