I remember the TV version of "Oh Whistle and I'll Come to You My Lad". It scared the crap out of me.

yes

Did you see the programme of BBC 4 a few weeks ago about ghost stories - this was featured.

As a kid, I liked the one with Denholm Elliot as the Signalman - The Signalman.

Well ok, technically it was Dickens, but in the same vein.

I watched the BBC4 doc and then "Oh Whistle" after it.. great stuff! They should show all of these over Christmas.. I recall they made a new one (again an MR James) a year or two back.

For those who haven't read them, the MR James ghost stories are available for buttons on Amazon etc in a single volume.. perfect Christmas reading by a roaring fire with a glass of your favourite tipple.

For the particularly thrify, due to the time since James's death, the vast majority of his works are available for free online.

For example: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/8486 or the audiobook http://librivox.org/ghost-stories-of-an-antiquary-...

I love MR James' ghost stories, and have read them numerous times. Didn't realise they were on TV. Must keep an eye out.

I thoroughly enjoyed Mark Gatiss's latest one on Xmas Eve: The Room In the Tower.
A great half hours viewing. It's on BBC i player and you can also get the previous 4 going back to 2021 easily via the i player guide.
Very well done.

The earlier ones (pre 2021) can also be found and we are going to take a look at his version of A Christmas Carol this eveni9ng
