Was lying in bed this morning and thought 'that's funny, the CH isn't on'. Coldest snowiest day of the year too. fk.

Went to investigate... pilot light on... electricity on... but HOneywell programmer dead, no display.

Rapid thinking - no CH, no heating , not hot water, snow outside, this is not good. I bought the programmer 18 months ago - how can it have failed?

First off - get the instructions. 'If no display, press reset'.

Press reset... hurrah! Boiler fires up. Release reset, boiler stops. Arse.

Hold reset button in for about ten seconds and release. Boiler works for about ten seconds and stops. Arse.

I ring Honeywell for suggestions. Receptionist is good but the customer helpline is swamped, can't get through. Guess I'm not the only one having problems!

I have a plan - some gaffer tape and a small object to keep the reset button depressed - take it off when the house is warm enough. Now that's what I call manual control...

Anyway, not long afterwards I look again and thank god, the blasted thing is suddenly alive and working properly - but it's lost all the time settings.

We had some power flickers yesterday evening with the thunder and lightning but the CH was working fine until bedtime.

There was rather a party atmosphere in Simpo Close this morning, what with the snow, schools closed, my commuting neighbours having the day off and taking their kids toboganning instead. Told my CH tale to a neighbour and he'd had the same thing! And yet all the other things in my house that have clocks and are mains powered are fine... so I wonder what happened. And why didn't the battery back-up in the programmer work, as it was only 18 months old and back-up batteries are supposed to last for 5 years?
