New PS3 recruit

My XBox 360 RROD'd the other night (and UPS can't pick it up until Monday for some reason) so I went out and bought a PS3 slim. I fancied playing some games over Christmas (when I have some time off work for a change) so I got the PS3 with Uncharted 2 and MW2.

As a new recruit to the PS3 scene I know very little about anything to do with it (I've had a 360 for 2 years so never paid the PS3 any attention). So, what is there to do with the PS3? I have heard that it is a great media centre, I know that it plays Blu-Rays and I have some games to play, but is there anything else to the PS3?

I suppose i'm specifically asking about the PS Network as I have never experienced it before. Do you have the demos, arcade games etc like Live? Is the network a flourishing place like Live and can you have friend parties etc? Are online games like MW2 good on there like on Live?

I have the console at home in the box and technically it won't be opened until christmas. So what am I looking forward to?

being a recent PS3 owner and past 360 owner I've got a list so far..
you can look forward to the following:

much more fiddly friend system
much less user-friendly game invite system
much more difficulty finding game demos/addons/etc
no party mode
Better graphics
no monthly subscription for online play, which unfortunately means more total goombas playing online.
the ability to dump divx movies onto the HD and play them

If you wanna play racing games too, you either have to get used to having contorted hands using the standard controller, shelling out for a wheel, or buying some Glotek Real Triggers.

The DualShock 3 controller's analogue triggers are ste compared to the 360's. When GT5 comes out I'll be buying some Real Triggers for mine. I have a GT Force Pro wheel but it's too much hassle setting it up.

I should have my XBox back in a few weeks, but not holding my breath as it is Christmas soon. I'm interested in people's opinions on the PS3 as I will be spending time on it over Christmas. I haven't completely binned off the XBox, I still have Forza3 to play on it when it comes back! I did get rid of around 12 games though!

The PS3 seems to me, from what i've read, to be a better media centre. But in terms of pure gaming it lacks a little behind the XBox. Also the PS3 does seem to be built better.

I guess that i'll be one of the best to judge this when I finally power the machine up over Christmas. I'll be hammering MW2 which will be odd on a different controller but i'll post up my gamertag (or whatever it is) when I fire it up.

I have no difficulty inviting friends to join my game,
Demos and add ons are simple to find in the ps store (I mean really simple!)
There are just as many "goombas" playing ps3 as there is 360 and with the ps not coming with a headset there are less people loving the sound of their own voices chatting crap in your ear constantly (there is generally les chat all round, can be a bad thing if tactics are your thing)

I would suggest downloading vidzone from the ps store, its a free music video streaming program, you can create your own playlists from 1000's of songs!

Ok there are a lot of goombas on xbox too, and ignoring the voice issue as all xbox do NOT come with a headset, online has to be paid for on the xbox, so the people playing online are more likely to want to be there or have some kind of sense i.e. income/job/etc. any PS owner can go online, so the number of people online is higher therefore the number of goombas is higher.


As you can see from my list, I've given good points and bad points, the only people who are going to argue that no bad points exist are PS3 fanboys who don't know any better (never used a 360) or ones that have used a 360 and are just deluding themselves. I don't doubt that the PS3 is a superior console technically, but interface wise the Xbox is better.

Have you seen a little button in the ps store that says latest??? Guess what that does? Demos are easy to find, I just got the GT5 demo and it took me 5 seconds to find it.

The invites thing is bull too, some games require a message to invite a friend most don't. I get an invite press the ps button and a couple of x pushes and I'm done, seriously is an extra button push really such a terrible thing? To invite I select friend the go down to join then x it's simple and really a non issue.

I'm not saying that the PS3 is perfect but your points that I've mentioned are not how you say they are.
