So the rumours are strengthening and evidence is building that the next Call of Duty (Treyarchs World at War follow-up) is going to be set in Vietnam.

Personally I am getting really excited about this, the thing that WaW did really well was build the tension and atmospere, particularly in the Multiplayer. The single player was also pretty gritty and the historical (i.e varied) weapons made things abit more thought provoking.

If Treyarch can sort out the slightly dodgy bullet detection this could be a real belter.

If the can transfer the atmosphere from WaW over to a Vietnam setting, a war that arguably had more iconic imagery human focus than any other then it will be an amazing game.

Imaging in multiplayer if one of the killstreak rewards is to circle the map in a Huey with an M60! Or a training level set in the camp from Full Metal Jacket. Or Napalm strikes.

Here's hoping.

Thats the thing. There are so many iconic films and songs from Vietnam and it has only been done once before (in an old BF game), there is so much for them to work with.

Apparently the main evidence that it will be a Vietnam game is that Treyarch have been 'buying the rights' to a whole load of 'Nam era music.

If one of the kill streaks was to have a swarm of hueys like the clip from Appocalypse Now. Also if they had trip wire traps instead of claymores or betty's like Men of Valour had.

WaW multiplayer sucked, but singleplayer was mint.

probs worth a rental when it comes out, just for single player.

I actually think WAW had the best balance for multiplayer out of all the cod games and the maps were far superior to cod 6 which imo has terrible maps.

It definately didn't suck, some of the maps were classics and the dogs were easily the best kill streak reward in any CoD game. Also the weapons were more varied and the War gamemode was ace.

It was only the slight dodgy bullet impact detection that let it down.

Please NO dogs frown I hate dogs !!!

Love the idea of music from the era......must have a search around youtube for classic Good Morning Vietnam etc music clips.

That classic shot of chopper mounted M60s as you fly over the paddy fields. Can almost smell it smile

Was that in multiplayer?

i loved WaW as a single player, very replayable. I agree with you, vietnam would be awesome.

It was done to death over about a 3 year period:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Vietnam_War_...

The majority of those are shooters released in the mid 2000s.

I can remember playing Shellshock and the like which were all rubbish. People got fed up of Vietnam games and they stopped making them.

whenever i played it was too full of campers. COD4 was far superiour.

single player was its most redeeming factor.

Treyarch?? I thought inactive vision had the rights to all the future ones now?

As posted above, will it really be any different from other Vietnam games released not so long ago?

I remember playing Vietcong and the like and really enjoying them but it's a very limited background. I thought that WaW felt a lot like a Vietnam game anyway, with the jungles and underground makeshift bunkers.

Saying that, if they do it right, the single player could be immense. Especially if they include things like:

An Apocalypse Now style boat scene, including the bridge at night-time.
A Full Metal Jacket sniper hunt in the destroyed city.
A We Were Soldiers helicopter landing, with defend the area.

Actually, bks to this, I'm going to make my own Vietnam game...

Activision are the publisher. Treyarch (WaW) and Infinity Ward (MW, MW2) are the developers.

It won't be a patch on Battlefield: Vietnam.

Unless you can use helicopters to airlift light tanks around to the soundtrack of Fortunate Son by CCR…

Nah they been signed up to work on 'CoD projects'. Could be the MMO Acti are on about, or for PSP/DS and Wii etc. I think 1 a year from themain 2 are about right for this Gen.

As for a Vietnam game, i think the reason its never been done too well is theres never been the technology to get them right. I mean its hard to recreate thick jungle and rice paddies with a decent level of detail. PS3 and 360 could and should be able to do this much more realistically.
Also the war isnt like WW2 in the fact that WW2 was a 'just cause' ridding the world of evil. Vietnam was and still is debatable.
