Want to start getting into messing around with Digital Images next year, hoping to get my digital camera sorted (need to replace the lcds lens, but thats another story)

I always assumed that in order to do this, I would have to shell out big bucks for Photoshop, but a couple of people have said that PSP will do nicely...

Am I better off spending the extra money and getting Photoshop though?

No idea what I will be using it for as yet, so cannot really answer that question...

I use both. PSP will do 90% of what PS will do and that last 10% you'll probably never need unless you are a pro.

PSP X photo is on offer at £39 IIRC

You can get a free 30 days try before you buy. Why not give them both a go and see what you prefer. I plumped for Pain Shop Pro. smile

GIMP or Paint.net might even do you if you don't know what you are going to be doing. Both of those are free...

Even though I use about 0.0001% of Photoshop's features I still prefer it over Paintshop. Even for the basics like the layout of the toolbox GUI, how layers work etc etc.

Like above, you can try them both and see which you prefer.

One is for men and one is for girls wink

But seriously, one advantge of PS is that it's the industry standard and so most tutorials are for PS and so I expect are plugins and other bits.

I agree that PS CSx is far too expensive for casual use, but PS Elements is affordable.

Photoshop smile

Take a look at Elements, its vastly reduced in price compared to CS4. I believe they do offer upgrades from Elements full-fat Photoshop on occasion as well smile

Cheers.

I've used both but prefer Photoshop as it seems more intuitive.

Also tried lightroom after CS3 and hated it.

Couldn't figure what the heck I was meant to be doing and icons seemed to be all over the place!

I might have just been in an impatient mood for a few days though confused.

The misses always says I'm a big girl though!

use neither now but started with PSP and as said it does most of what PS does but the interface is about as user friendly as GIMP which is another reason why Opensource will never work

Slightly off topic (but not worth starting another thread)....

What's the difference between the Full Fat Photoshop and PS Elements?
