Just heard on Radio 1's Newsbeat that agriculture is responsible for 15% of greenhouse gases.

Far from being an expert, but I'm pretty confident that at most agriculture is responsible for 15% of human caused greenhouse emissions, so I'm inclined to complain and add yet another voice to the call that we now have a propaganda machine for a national broadcaster.

Could anyone provide me (preferably from a BBC endorsed source) the percentages of greenhouse gases that are caused by human activity, and the percentage of the total greehouse emissions (natural and man made) that is due to agriculture?

Thought it was something that could easily lead to a retraction and correction, rather than expecting a u-turn on the whole issue of MMCC...

Thanks in advance,

Sam

Surley crops are carbon neutral anyway ?

Are we supposed to just eat sand now?

And rocks..... we are all meant to live in caves and eat rocks to 'save' the planet.

Thank the Lord Harry, that photosynthesis doesn't rely on the plant taking CO2 out of the air and turning it into O2 rather than the other way around.

Er? Oops? Are they talking cow trumps?
So it is the provisional wing of the Vegetarian Society trying to get us off meat.

Sorry, should have been clearer, it is gaseuous emissions of a methane flavour that alledgedly provides 15% of all greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

Quite a lot of hot air being emitted I thought, and not a lot of it caused by bovines from Aberdeen called Angus!!

I was fairly certain, although happy to be corrected, that water vapour makes up about 98% of all our greenhouse gases.

Nah, don't exaggerate, it's only about 94%..... Hardly worth mentioning......

There are some stats and links here.

https://statistics.defra.gov.uk/esg/ace/dd1_data.h...

That might help a bit but it won't be trivial seeing this one through as the percentage could refer to mass or volume and it depends on what 'greenhouse' gases are included in the calculation.

If I remember correctly the volume of total CO2 emissions that are attributable to mankind is 0.00022%. So the answer to your second question is x% of an infinitesimal percentage.
