Sorry if this is a repost (I did search) but the BBC has an interactive map of road deaths in the UK over the last 10 years. See here.

A little morbid but it'll be interesting to compare this with known speed camera locations.

Sounds morbid, but can we have road deaths vs other causes? Want to put the final figure in perspective.

I think the data for 2008 is somewhere in here (a large PDF!).

well i am aware of at least 2 deaths in the last twelve months that are not on that map. Totally down to cars and drink driving.....

Well the data is up to 2008, so the chance of something from the last 12 months being on the map is a bit slim......

Interesting map - one of the crashes near me links to a news article about the incident (biker killed and pillion son injured by a female driver who had never held a licence and been previously convicted of DD - she got 9 months in jail, and a 2 year driving ban rolleyes).

A guy I know that was killed in an RTA in 2002 is on there.

Strange to see him reduced to simply

"02:44 Sunday May 5th 2002.

Male 19 Passenger

1 vehicle"

Someone I know is on that map from 2000.

Wasn't drink driving, I know that. Completely misjudged corner (going too fast, but well within speed limit) on a country road and hit tree on other side of road. Another friend of mine's brothers were all in the car but all survived.

Of the 5 deaths listed on the Wirral peninsular, the causes break down as follows (thanks to

1 3 year old ran into road and was hit by passing car (no excess speed involved)
1 Moped rider pulled out of side road into path of a taxi cab.
1 Biker lost it flying up a dual carriageway - one of the few roads that DOES IMHO need a speed camera.
2 old people stepped into traffic without looking

So at least near me it's a 4-1 ratio of not paying attention to excess speed

Well, going all the way back to 1999, we have zero fatalities where the speed camera is near me. I always thought there had to have been at least three???

there are at least 2 deaths missed off that happened within the last 10 years.

In Blackpool, one of the deaths occurred 5metres before a speed camera (actually 2 cameras as there is one each side of the road). A bus pulled out of a side street to cross a main road straight in front of a motorbike. This was about 7:30 on a Saturday morning.

This is known locally as a bad junction for turning right out of as you have to 2 lanes of traffic each way with insufficient space to stop in the central reservation area.

How's this for perspective:

In 2007, twice as many people killed themselves in the UK as died in road traffic accidents.

can you back those up?

If so, why are we not campaigning to help prevent these deaths?

My mate's a cop and he tells me that any death on the road is classed as an RTA death. He attended an incident where the driver had basically suffered a heart attack but had sufficient presence of mind and ability left to 'park' his motor before he checked out. He did actually hit a lampost - not too hard - but the cause of death was principally his heart condition. This is still ranked as motoring accident though.

The suicide rate in 2007 was around 5,500, and IRRC only accounted for adults over 15. This can be found on the Office of National Statistics site (government figures).

http://www.statistics.gov.uk/cci/nugget.asp?id=109...

The road traffic stats can be found on the BBC site linked above, but have been under 3,000 p.a. for years, including 2007.

Of course, it does beg the questions about priorities, but then I guess you can't extract as much political capital out of stopping a tiny minority of people killing themselves as you can by shouting from the hills that you're stopping people killing little children by the truckload, when in fact your chances of dying a road accident are vanishingly small and if you don't ride a motorbike they get even smaller.

I've just taken a look at the figures for Epsom & Ewell where I live. I was rather surprised. Since 1999, only one child has been killed on our road (I'm not counting the 17yr old cyclist sideswiped by a truck) as against 6 people over the age of 75!

It's interesting to see that around here the road where I would expect lots of deaths (the super twist ones where people go driving/riding round like absolute lunatics on summers days/evenings)
yet the roads where you wouldn't expect them are littered with them
