Timber garage insulation
Discussion
After freezing my *!**! off in the garage I've decided I've just got to install some kind of insulation. What's best for a timber garage?
The walls are lined with 12mm ply (no insulation in gap) and the roof is tiled with breathable membrane underneath reclaimed clay tiles.
I have been looking at some of the foil type insulation which look pretty easy to install on the underside of the rafters. Trouble is there appear to be 2 types:
a) bubble wrap with foil backing (cheap)
b) multi-layer foil/wadding (expensive)
Should I only be installing breathable insulation in a timber garage or can I use the bubble wrap stuff if I put some 'vent tiles' in my roof?
Or am I talking cr*p?
thanks
Mike

Rember insulation work in two ways'keeping heat in' or 'keeping heat out' IE fridge you will only get any benifits if you have a heating unit in the garage when working there. 'Kingspan' laid between studs after removal of ply skin is your best option with the ply replaced. Also look at seals around door opening (but rember to ventilate for health / safety.
You shouldn't need vent tiles if you have a breathable 'felt' under the tiles. Use Kingspan between the rafters or foil-type insulation tacked to the rafters. You'd also need to try and fix draughts from around the doors. As you are effectively trying to seal the garage a dehumidifier may be a good idea and if you want to be warm in there, a source of heat.
Thanks for the replies. Some food for thought there. I think I'll go with foil on the rafters simply due to ease of installation. That also gives me plenty of gap between insulation and membrane. Then address the walls later.
Dehumidifier is definitely on the list. I've been reading a thread on here all about them.
Next question was going to be all about heating. I was thinking of infra red but that seems to just provide a very 'localised' heat. Any suggestions of something 'safe' in a timber garage (it's about 25 sqm)?
thanks
