The first one is the right bit with the orange cog - but the connector to the wiring is the same as the second one 
You might be able to make the first one work if you cut the connectors off and join the wires directly, but thats a total guess.

The replacement sender I bought, which looks identical to my original.
I bought it as a Rover SD1 V8 speedo sender.
I am not sure if my original has the writing on the side.
There is apparently more than one version of this sender - determined by the number of pulses per revolution (4 or 8 IIRC).
The only way I could work out anything along those lines is through a tiny hole in the housing - you can see part of the innards go past the hole (a coil I think) and you can count them, I can't remember which mine was but this one is the same.
Steve (SEB400) also told me that the little hole is good for letting the smoke out when you wire it up wrong
Steve also told me he got hold of a sender with a different coloured cog (which I think is related to the number of teeth) and managed to pull it off & replace it with the orange cog from his original sender.

Not sure if this helps but changed mine a few months ago. As Barcychoc says you need to count the the blades in the unit. I marked the outside with a tippex pen, put a pin in the hole and then counted the blades until a full revolution. I then got one from Neil at TVR carparts. Bad news is only one of them is still available and i can't remember which one I had now.
