The Labour party is gearing up for an early general election as a new Sunday Times poll reveals a narrowing of the Conservative lead.

Party chiefs have ordered staff to be ready to fight an election any time from the new year amid growing Labour optimism that a Conservative victory can be averted.

Gordon Brown last week addressed a private “key seats” meeting, when candidates were told to have their campaign literature ready for publication by the end of next month.

The party’s general secretary, Ray Collins, is understood to have told No 10: “We will be ready whenever you decide to go.”

Labour headquarters are accelerating the process of selecting parliamentary candidates, with bosses set to take new powers in the new year to parachute party loyalists into winnable seats.

Yes I agree.
The climate "debate" has/is polarising the opposition and causing the main party to hemorrhage voters away to the UKIP, BNP.
Slowly but surely the gap has closed and will close further as the "dirty tricks" brigade get to work.

Maybe they heard Osborne on Jeremy Vine (R2) last week and concluded the Opposition have nothing to say on the economy. He was pathetic.

No, an 'early' general election would have been when Winky assumed power.

He bottled that one.

I suspect that he may march the Labour Party up to the top of the election readiness hill again, only to have another poll piss on his chips, and march them back down again.

And when he was up, he was a ...and when he was down, he was a , and when only half way up, he was even more of a than ever.

An early election would make sense. Labour don't have the money for a long drawn out campaign, and the Conservatives would out spend them easily.

A times reader made an interesting point regarding this article.

Basically, he said that Labour would be foolish to call an election before the clocks change, as their welfare clients would be unlikely to vote in the dark. I think he's right. In fact, I don't think they'll vote in significant numbers anyway. The underclass in this country just don't care about anything.

Labour are terrified of having to produce another financial report; I'm convinced the election will come before we find out what a truly awful mess they have got us in.

Personally, I don't think it matters either way.

I am of the opinion that there will be a Tory landslide. Things can only get worse for the Uk between now and an election.

I do wish Cameron would pledge not to change Inheritance tax though till the country's finances were sorted. The plan on this tax is simply not worth the mileage it gives to Labour. It seems to me that IT is the only stick they have to beat DC with right now. Remove that and they are left to fight on their own record.

I am disheartened at those who intend to vote UKIP. Principles are great in theory. Sadly, politics is a "reality" sport. There are only 2 choices come the next GE, irrespective of whether one thinks that right or wrong, fair or unjust. A vote for UKIP is a vote for Labour. We may not like that, but it is true.

No principle is worth the risk of another term of Winky. Vote with your heads, guys, not your hearts. Afterall, the policies of UKIP are significantly more likely to occur under a Tory government than a Labour one. If you truly believe in the UKIP stance, a Tory government has to be preferable.

I am in agreement with just about everyone regarding Dave upping his game. Hopefully, this will happen. I am confident that he will. Like most, I am concerned about Osbourne. He just *looks* out of his depth, somehow. I suspect he will take a backseat in any campaign, with Hague, Kenny and Boris taking the lead roles.

The whole "immigrants vote labour" stance is also wrong imho. Let's face it, most of the folks who are prepared to travel half way round the world, or even half way across Europe are those with get up and go. The middle classes of their homeland. If they vote at all, I trust them to have the intelligence to see where things are headed and cast their ballots accordingly.

It is only natural to fear another term of Labour to the point where we begin to question whether the alternative really has it in them to win. It is our duty, as the nation's intelligencia, to keep these doubts inside our heads and fight fire with fire. I for one will not openly express my doubts about the Tory high command to anybody other than another person whose vote I know will be blue.

We must do whatever it takes to rid ourselves of New Labour. Gaining Power is all that matters at this stage. I love my country and if a slight leap of faith is required, at this time of grave national danger, I will take it.

Will you feel so proud if Labour win by a whisker?

Serious question....

Im going to vote Labour.

They **** the bed, let them sleep in it. All this reckless spending lately has been a scorched earth policy and I Don't want to allow them to blame the next few years on the Tories.

They are a bunch of useless wkers who don't represent my views and hold me in utter contempt as a voter so i will be utterly pissed off when they win.

So i can still say i didn't vote for those wkers

That applies to ALL main parties

We have to get them out to ensure that the UL doesn't become a third world country.

Whilst I would prefer to vote UKIP for the sensibility of it, sadly I think in order to ensure Winky doesn't get in I'm going to have to vote for the bluey/green party. And then hope we can bully them into dropping this AGW s***e.

It is vitally important that the Tories win the next election.

We stand at a cross roads, one road leads to our destruction as a first world economy, the other to at least a chance of turning the tide.

Yes the Tories are nearly as keen on MMGW as Labour. But this is not a single issue election and if Labour get back in once more it will be the end.

How can the party of the public sector unions and the client state do what is needed?

I don't think an early election is likely, winky won't call one until he is sure it will be a win for him or he runs out of time.

To call one and get a non working majority would result in a 2nd election fairly soon, and labour can't afford one election, let alone two.

He'll hang on to the last possible moment, and misjudge the timing, as usual.

I read an article which suggested that one of the ways that Gordon Brown/Labour could combat the Tory threat is by adopting the Tony Blair approach of essentially nicking all of their good policies - could this be one of the reasons that hard policy facts are thin on the ground?

Barack Obama got enough stick for letting the Taliban know the date America was planning on closing the door as they left as apparently you should keep your enemy in the dark as to your plans...
