hi all.

i have just finished my super charged 67 ford mustang elanor , i have an orignal power steering set up but cant really fit in the pump with a pulley because of the restriction with the 6 71 super charger . i spoke with demon tweeks and rally design today and they both said that the electric power steering pumps from either a peugeot or renault will be ok ????? they said a lot of people have been doing these conversions on all sorts of cars. my concern is the weight . i have a 7 litre v8 with the gm 6 71 super charger. alot of weight and also i have 275 wide tyres. help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How low is the gearing on the steering of an old Mustang?

Is a 67 Mustang really much heavier than, say, a Peugeot 607?

Most modern cars have electric power steering (the general exception being sports cars because it tends to ruin the feel of the steering) so there will certainly be a system out there that will cope fine. It's just a question of which one.

BMW certainly use an electric setup on the Z4, I don't know about the heavier models.

Are you after a purely electric system (where the electric motor is connected to the steering column) or an electro-hydraulic system (which is like a hydraulic system but the pressure is provided by an electric pump rather than an engine-driven pump)?

Have you looked in the states ?

Something like this from flaming rover may be adaptable to the mustang http://www.rodandcustommagazine.com/techarticles/0...

I wouldn't be surprised if there is a kit for mustangs out there to convert a manual rack to electric.

Edit: Just thinking, you aren't the only guy to run a 6/71, there is a solution out there to your problem - it might just be a different bracket for the pump..
Found this thread: http://www.stangnet.com/mustang-forums/766128-im-g... maybe it will help, failing that you could post over there, I'm sure someone will know what bracket you need

You could try this company:

http://www.ezpowersteering.nl/index.php?p=7&la...

They have an agent in the UK and have a kit for the Mustang. No experience other than getting a quote for my TR.

hi guys. great input thanks . i do not want to change my coloumn so i want a stand alone electric pump to replace my stock belt driven pump which i can put in a more convenient place. i also have methanol / water injection and the alu tank is where the battery was. so no room at all to fit or have it driven from a pulley. look on my profile pic and you will see

All sorts of cars use electric pumps these days, including lots of very heavy ones. I suspect just about all the latest crop of SUVs and big saloons do. You need to be looking for cars without electric power steering setups. smile

with the extra weight and it runnung on 275's it will not be easy to park and move in very low speeds. i have the whole power steering set up to put on and want to use it as its all been re conditioned. all i want to do is not use the pump as i cant drive it with a belt. so i need a electric one that is not fixed to the steering coloumn. most manufacturers put them on the steering rack which invloves a lot of electrics , ecu , switches etc.
