The PH game of the decade?
Discussion
So then, 14 days until the end of another decade.
What do the PH gamers rate as the your personal favourite, most important and greatest games of the decade? Three categories as the greatest, most important and your favourite may not all be the same but they may not be mutually exclusive.
Anyway to get us started:
Favourite: GTA Vice City - I just love it.
Most Important: World of Warcraft - No other game has been such an influence in other forms of media, it had it's own South Park episode for christs sake!
Greatest: Fallout 3 - It's just imense, would take pages to write-up why it's so good.

Favourite: TES: Oblivion - I loved this game, bought it not knowing much about it but it turned out to be my most played game of the last few years. Epic from start to finish.
Most important: COD4- Modern Warfare - I doubt anyone thought it would be as big as it turned out to be and in my eyes its better than the new one, COD6 is a bit James Bond don't you think??
Greatest: The Orange Box - I'd never played Half Life before I bought this and it blew me away, stunning games and a bargain to boot. Also contains the greatest side game of all time too in the form of Portal, I'd have paid the price of the game just for that

I play games a lot (not so much now but for most of the decade as a teenager) but I dont play a lot of games - ie. I buy one and play it lots, rather than buy lots and play them a bit, and play mostly FPS, so having not played that many different games and genres my list will probably be different to others:
Favourite Game: Battlefield Vietnam - Good graphics for the time. Jets, Hueys and Jeeps, with the odd tank thrown in - whats not to like? 64 player online play was just awesome, made for some great team play as well, felt like fighting as a proper army rather than the usual 10 v 10. Awesome soundtrack which really added to the already great atmosphere of the in-game environment.
Most Important: COD4 - Worth the price just for the multiplayer, so the short-length of the (awesome) single-player didnt detract from a great game. Importantly it delivered, IMO, a near-perfect balancing point between variety and features that keep it interesting but dont make it unrealistic and frustrating - I haven't actually played COD6, but all this stuff about heart-beat monitors and the like puts me off buying it (without hard-core mode COD4 may have been the same to me - having a 'radar' showing where all the players are just ruins it for me, probably why I like WWII games so much, basic weapons and (lack of) technology make you more involved in the game and your decisions make more of a difference).
Greatest: GTA: Vice City - May have been just a standard evolution in the GTA series, but it was the first one I owned, rather than play at mates houses, so it was the first I really got into and played from start to finish. And when you get to the finish, theres so many achievements you can try and complete if you are so inclined. Big map, plenty of different vehicles, decent variety of missions and just so so fun to go off and do your own thing when you cant be arsed with a mission. Owning it on the PC meant I could actually aim the guns, rather than toggle through victims like the console versions, and the keypad was just as good for driving when you got used to it. Oh, and like B:Vietnam, the music adds another level to the gampeplay, and fitted the Miami style game environment perfectly.

Uhh think you guys are forgetting something
Counter Strike
I think without this online First person shooters would not be where they are today and that includes the all so impressive Cod4 (never really got why it was so good myself).
As for the best game I would say any of the Total war games. You can play them again and again and again and get different results each time plus loads of mods out there to keep you entertained.
Best MMO for me has been EvE no other game lets you get away with being an asshole as much as EvE does. Plus free addon packs (well thats what you pay monthly for right?) and so much stuff to do its kept me quite for over 2 years now. Only managed around 3 months on WoW, Galaxies, Matrix etc in comparison.

GT4: While it may have been overshadowed lately by newer, prettier games, you can't ignore the impact this game had when it was released.
While some may claim it to be an evolution rather than a revolution, it was the first game I bought more than once, (I've had four copies and a couple of consoles) and the only game I've bought a special controller for (Logitech Driving Force Pro).

It's the last of the great offline games, when multiplayer meant split screen with your mates on the couch, and photos were uploaded using a USB stick and Sneakernet.
It's the game that introduced the Nurburgring and the Le Sarthe track to a new generation of motoring fans, and influenced the buying habits of thousands of petrolheads. (I bought my first MX5 in Gran Turismo.)
Before we'd ever heard of Tsuchiya-san and Tokyo Drift, we were getting sideways around Autumn Ring and Trial Mountain, tweaking setups and practicing techniques.
I spent days swapping wheels and messing about with wings, switching between high power to high grip setups. Even if its range of modifications were limited, it was only to emphasise the performance aspect over the bling.
As for Warcraft, 11 million people can't be wrong, surely?

I think you're forgetting the decade part of the equation, it originally came out in 1999, so was too early to count.Counter Strike

Favourite: Metal Gear Solid 3 - Spent more time on this game than anything.
Most important: Call of Duty 4 - Set the bar for FPS. I'm not a big shooter fan but this was great. Still better than mw2 IMO
Greatest: Grand Theft Auto Vice City - Moved GTA on a generation, loved the 80s theme, still play on it every now and again.

Favourite: Counter Strike 1.6 (released in 2003) - Without a doubt my fave game of the decade. My first PC shooter and haven't played anything else on PC since. Have wasted months of my life playing this game. Owned and ran Servers & Clans. Best gameplay around.
Most important: Grand Theft Auto 3 - Full imersive sand box game. Where the player can do what they want when they want. Although not as great as the GTA Vice City & 4 they are all still based of the idea of GTA3
Greatest: COD4 - The first real game to gain complete blockbuster like status in my opinion becoming the benchmark for shooters. Although there are several flaws the Online game play and quality of the missions makes it the Greatest game of the Decade!

My faves of the last decade (so far):
Final Fantasy 8 (most people prefer 7, but I liked the real-proportion people more)
GTA3 - Sod Vice City - the first GTA in 3d!!
Fallout 3 (altho 1+2 might sneak into this decade?)
Final Fantasy 8 - Released 1999. Final Fantasy 8 (most people prefer 7, but I liked the real-proportion people more)
GTA3 - Sod Vice City - the first GTA in 3d!!
Fallout 3 (altho 1+2 might sneak into this decade?)
I'll sit here and play date-police. Too tough to come up with only 3 games from 10 years of play. Especially as I'm likely to be influenced by more recent titles and forget what I really enjoyed 10 years ago.

Oh well, CS: Source probably should be in there, then.

What about the sorce engine? Highlighting that physics can be fun and useful in games.

While I agree with most of the posts on here in relation to COD4 and GTA 3/4
I think honourable mentions have to go to
Gears of War : Gave a great insight into the depth both graphically and content the next gen consoles would be able to give us
Project Gotham 3 : There was no Forza and GT wasnt on 360 this filled the gap superbly and again some astounding visuals
Fifa 09: The year Fifa started to win the fight back (IMO)
I am without a console at the moment and as you can probably tell most of my previous time was on 360 but I am hoping for a PS3 from Santa this year, itching to try COD6 and Fifa 10
