Wide Angles - Canon fit
Discussion
Looking for a wide angle for a crop body. I *think* I want 10mm so I can get as wide as possible if I need to. I am heavily influenced by some of the 10mm shots I've seen and want to be able to recreate it. I dont mind the distortion as I feel that adds to the image. I am looking for sharpness and good CA. Most of my shots will probably be landscape shots at this time. In the future I'd like to move into reportage but feel that its some way away yet.
Anyway if you could give me some ideas on the Canon 10-22 and Sigma 10-20 as to which is better to go for. I've considered the Tamron and Tokina's but they dont seem to get as good a write up?
Anyone looking to sell one of them?

IMO the sigma is sharper (center) than the canon by a touch, has better CA but poorer flare control.
Theres not a lot between them tho. More than happy with my 10-20 sigma.
Except the price Rob! Might have to look into the Sigma a bit more as I was swaying towards the Canon...Theres not a lot between them tho. More than happy with my 10-20 sigma.
i tested the canon 10-24mm, but ended up with a Tokina 11-16mm f2.8, as i already had an 18+mm lens, so no point doubling up. Tokina feels well built and is also pretty fast - which is handy for taking photos of big stuff you cant light properly, like buildings etc. cost wise, i think its in the middle somewhere, but i remember getting a good deal through onestop digital - £397 i think.
edit - never heard a bad word about the sigma though!

If you're worried about the sigmas sharpness... warning: 4mb

I've not used the Sigma, but I have the EFS 10-22 and love it. Always seems very sharp to me for a non-L lens and works quite well in low light especially at 10mm.
I want to get a 5DMk2 and to me one of the major downsides to that would be losing this lens

I hav ethe 16-35mm f2.8L which should be pretty well the same range, allowing for the lack of crop factor with the 5D Mk II. I love this lens. The only problem is the price.I want to get a 5DMk2 and to me one of the major downsides to that would be losing this lens

Very sharp Jon! The only concern I have is whether I would need the slightly faster Canon? I am going to be going along with a wedding tog soon and so don't know whether the Canon would be a better choice in the long run for indoor work. http://postworkout.com/jon/public/misc/camera/IMG_...

Sigma do an f3.5 version of the 10-20 if you need a faster lens:

The bonus with this lens is the 3.5 over the entire zoom range.

I have the 'ordinary' Sigma 10-20mm. Although it's slower, I tend to use it for general views, so although the shutter speed may be slower, camera-shake is less of a factor at such a wide angle. Leastways, it's not been a problem.Gassing Station | Photography & Video | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
