My lovely Chimaera is due for a service next month, and I've noted that lots of people get their chassis steam-cleaned and waxoyled... but is it really worth £230?!? If I had any facilities, I'd do it myself, but I don't, and I don't have the time either. So do I let the professionals do it at great expense, find some cowboys to do a half-hearted job for £100, or do I leave it until the day that £230 doesn't matter anymore?

Cheers,
Mike.

I would not bother haveing the chassis steam cleaned before you have it waxoiled, I like to make sure mine is as dry as possible. You will only be putting oil back on anyway. It will probably be cheaper with just the waxoil. On a ramp with a compressor and the like I should think it would only take 2-3 hours to do a good job. £100 should be more than enough IMHO.

From what I have been told in the past steam cleaning is a
You're better off doing it yourself - but only if it needs it. If the wishbones and chassis is displaying signs of cracked powder-coat and flaky surface rust then get down and get at it! Get all the loose stuff off plus wirebrush job, Hammerite (or similar) then waxoyl spay. Should end up something like this:

BUT this was done in the summer! I wouldn't recommend d.i.y. in this weather, unless you have the space in a heated garage.

I would waxoyl whatever the apparent condition of your chassis. Having spent £4k on having mine re-coated last year I will be waxoyling it (or getting it done at least) on a regular basis.

TVR do such a poor job of initial powder coating I would not trust it at all. If you waxoyl atleast you know that it is protected - which cannot be said for TVR's powder coatings.

I would get prices from a few different places but I agree on the fact that I wouldn't want it steam cleaned (scraped with a wire brush - yes. Covered in steam that will get in all the cracks - no) and I would definately prefer to do it after a warm dry spell so there is very little chance of trapping water under the waxoyl.

I would get it done, but...

Make sure it is proper job. Mine cost around £200. For that they chemically cleaned the chassis, repainted any parts on the chassis that required it, let it all dry and then Waxoyl'd.

Might be a bit more expensive than doing it yourself, but if you don't have ramps, spray gun, garage, time etc.

Dave.

Peninsular charged me £80 + vat for a steam/waxoyl - total bargain, or you have been quoted rip off prices!

Peninsular know what they are doing, so I imagine the latter above applies.

[]TVR chassis are made from recycled bits of old Fiat, with Tesco carrier bags melted over them - even new ones rust - so do yourself/subsequent owner a favour and get it done![/]

With imminent cold spell - next road trip will cover your chassis with salt - you know it makes sense

Use Tectyl 506 instead of Waxoyl - much better and won't just wash off. Icamm - with a completely 'as new' chassis you should definitely use Tectyl - ideally you should have got it coated before reassembly.

I will talk to my specialist about using this. It wasn't done straight away as the new coating is so thick, and with a rust proofing done underneath, that it was not deemed necessary by Tower View. However, I will be getting it checked at the next service.

Basically the refurb was done properly. Which means it should last alot longer than the original coating.

Anyone know anywhere near Yorkshire that can do a similar Penninsular type waxoil service. Mine was up on a ramp yesterday and, although a bit oily with odd bits of flaky paint, looked pretty solid. I'd like to get it cleaned, repainted and waxoiled and keep it that way

My car is waxoiled, its a 1988 car and the chassis is just like new
Maybe you can find a little local garage that could do a first class job for less money.

Deffinately get it Waxoled.

If you do it yourself take heed of warning about well ventillated area etc. I didn't, ended up sick as a parrot.

Thanks for all this. I'll have a chat with them when I take her in, and see what you actually get for your money. Given the current weather conditions, it will be all wet, salty and probably muddy anyway, so will definitely need some form of cleaning before spraying...

Cheers,
Mike.

An independent nr London was recently offering a FREE waxoil with every service.. was it Racing Green? There was an ad on PH about it. Not sure if offer has expired or not though.

It was CDL who were running the advert about free Waxoyl with a service. They are in Grays South Essex.

Well my car's due for a 48k service and if Christopher Neil, H.L. Gorner or Harrogate Horseless Carriages offered a free waxoil, that would definately swing my decision

Huhum... if they read these forums of course.

Yep..We're watching and listening BUT I’m sat here at home currently (deliberating over whether to choose Crimewatch or The Miners Strike for the 9.00pm viewing slot!)

Let me double check our 48k service price when i'm back in tomorrow morning and we’ll see what we can do with the Waxoyl!
