Garage door - extra security?

I have what I would call a normal garage door. Twist the handle in the middle of the door which releases two catches at the top of the door and the door swings up. Sorry I don't know the proper name.
Door seems to be made of very thin metal with metal framework.

Anyone have any suggestions of how to make this door more secure? I was thinking about adding some form of lock/bolt/whatever at the bottom of the door each side but am unsure of the best way to do this.

Has anyone done anything similar? Any suggestions?

My old neighbour had a big bolted section at the bottom of his - with a massive padlock. Looks very secure.

Although, knowing what these doors are like, a good kick at the side of it will have it off the hinges in no time - although it's not very quiet.

2 schools of thought I guess:

a) Extra visible security is a deterrent
b) Extra security makes it look like you've got things to nick

Can you access the garage from a house etc. so lock it from the inside? If so then drill through the sides of the frame and stick some kind of bolts in.

there have been reported instances of people just bending these type of doors. maybe line it with ply

Sink a couple of removeable locking posts into the ground in front of the door. That way if they do get the door open, (destroying it in the process) they won't be able to drive away with your P&J.

I was going to say the posts too. They (hopefully) won't bother to tackle the door if they have to take an angle grinder to the post pad-lock afterwards.

I've got one of these.

When the garages round our way got broken into they stuck a screwdriver or something in at the top and forced down the pins that went into the frame. They have been tried again, due to more signs of damage, but mine was left alone.

Cound even put some locking pins in at the bottom so it can't easily get bent up.

Thing is though, if they want to get in they will, just need to make it hard for them so they try somewhere else.

Thanks for the replies.

I have access via a back door from the garden so could put a couple of locks/bolts near the bottom of the door. Would prefer fitting something on the inside, as someone said, if they see locks outside they may think I have something of value inside.

Not worried about my car getting stolen, more the bikes and tools.

I know you can never stop someone if they are determined but I am working on the idea that if they try to get in and it doesn't work straight away they will move on somewhere else instead of risking making extra noise.
