Looks like my Canon MiniDV camcorder has died due to some fault in the spoolong mechanism so that it won't accept tapes any more - suspect it'll be uneconomic to repair.

Please can someone recomend me a basic camcorder to replace it. I'm serious about my stills photography, but have no real interest in video so just need something basic to capture family events, kids birthday parties etc.

I understand that in the 5 years or so since I bought my last one solid state recording to SD cards has become popular, which sounds much better to me than messing around with tapes.

Grateful for any recomendations.

Ive just purchased a Panasonic sd10 for my dad for xmas. Its full hd takes sd cards, and is very light and compact. I would say its an ideal holiday cam so you just carry it where you like. Just over 300 quid at the moment so wont break the bank.

I know nothing about camcorders, but bought Mrs Beano an SD-10 a few months back. Seems to be a super, foolproof (well Beano-proof anyway), well screwed-together, excellent results for what we want, bit of kit. I think well worth the £350-ish that you can find it for now.

For around 100 quid i would have to recommend the Flip HD camcorder, as it is so simple i find we use it much more than a more sophisticated camcorder. I am more into still photography, so the Flip is just a nice addition that really is easy to take anywhere and therefore gets more use.

I managed to haggle at Comet and get the cam for £300 plus an extra £30 for a Lowepro bag and 8gb card with it. Bargain
