Where is the best place to buy this i stay in Ayrshire and cant source it so looking at mail order and a bulk buy as i have a few mates who want some too any ideas

Have you heard of KBS Rust seal? similar to POR 15 but better and in many different colours. Finish is not affected by UV light (not that it will be a problem under a car!). Apparently developed by people who previously worked for POR 15. Anyway I have used it and it is extremely tough and goes on really nicely and leaves a high gloss finish which seems very tough.

Is it proven though - POR 15 we know is good.

From what I understand they have taken the POR15 recipe and improved on it so it should at least be as good as. The only experience I have personally is using it on a project a while back and as i said above it went on nice and dried to a very smooth gloss finish, but I have no long term experience... There is plenty to read on their website but I guess that is going to be biased!

If you decide to go down the POR15 route, order the half a dozen small tins rather than one large one. The stuff goes off when in contact with air, so any left in the bottom of a tin can go off.

When storing any left in a tin, put clingfilm over the top before putting the lid on, this saves the lid bonding to the tin. And store it upside down so if it does go off because of the air in the tin, the hard skin is at the bottom when you open it.

Oh, and don't get it on your skin whatever you do. You probably will because nobody ever believes the warnings, but at least I can say "I told you so" later.
It doesn't wipe or wash off skin. You have to scrape or wear off the layer of skin its attached to.
I had a black smear across my neck for a week. It even survived daily shaving!

Sadly, this appears not to work very well. I started with one layer and worked my way up to 4 layers of clingfilm, but it still glues the lids onto the tins. Perhaps the film is (slightly) soluble in POR15?

I definitely agree with buying small tins and not getting any on yourself, though. If it sticks to TVR chassis half as well as it sticks to everything else, it's bloody marvellous.

Thanks guys all stuff i did not know about and given me things to think about i will be buying it after x-mas as i am spending lots of time on the prep work side to get it right and funds at this time of year are tight and in the middle of buying a new flat.

I will look in to both products and ask around before i make my mind up.

If you do POR, make sure you do at least 2 coats. One heavy coat will not completely seal the surface.
I did my outriggers and only had time for one coat. Six months on i had little brown speckles of rust
showing, even though the car had not left the garage. No problem that another coat/waxoyl wouldn't cure but be aware, it dries a bit porous even when you correctly prepare the metal.

You need to apply the coats together, not until touch dry but before cured so that they bond properly. Coverage is pretty good if you clean and wipe down with thinners to ensure the surface is prepped. Common a garden celly thinners will clean you and brushes etc... the hard to get off babble is a bit of a myth IMHO?

Depends if it's cured or not. AFAIK, POR15 cures through polymerisation caused by exposure to the moisture in the air (in the same way as cyanoacrylate "superglue"). If you clean it off before this has happened it comes off reasonably easily with thinners. If you let it cure, the only way to get it off is mechanically.

Don't bother cleaning brushes either, just get the 6 for a £1 from the pound shop and lob them when finished.
