Good Alternative Routes

I was thinking of taking a longer route down this year to avoid the traffic and gendarmes.

As we're crossing to Calais, possibly down to the SE of Paris and around, probably further out than the peritherique (too much wine inbibed to spell!).

Has any experience of a detour such as this?

If you get hold of the Michelin equivalent of our Ordnance Survey maps (available in WHSmiths etc.) then 'scenic routes' are highlighted. Might make route planning easier.
