Shanghai Plane Crash
Discussion
On reuters, not as bad as I first feared from the pictures (which were billowing just smoke) & not much else.

You may be thinking of the DC-10. The MD-11 is a "modernised" development of the DC-10 featuring a fuselage stretch and a two man "glass" cockpit as opposed to a three man conventional cockpit.
The MD-11 was not the success McDonnell Douglas hoped it would be and was part of the reason they went into decline as a company and were eventually bought out by Boeing - who promptly shut down the MD-11 production line.

No, deffo the MD-11, I've been on DC-10's - I fly a LOT! The MD-11's that KLM had were the huge 3-motor wide-body jets. I'm sure that 'Aircrash Invetigators' have done a few progs on them.
I just know I don't like 'em!
The Sioux city crash of 1989. United Airlines DC-10 was one of the programmes.I just know I don't like 'em!

As is the DC-10. Externally they look very similar. The main external giveaway of the MD-11 is the set of winglets on the wingtips.I just know I don't like 'em!
DC-10
MD-11
Spot the differences.
The fact that you described the MD-11s as being a "huge three engined" aircraft indicated that you thought that this was the defining difference between the MD-11 and a DC-10. As you can see from the pictures, they are BOTH "huge three engined" aircraft.
I'm not saying you didn't fly in an MD-11 (although KLM also operated DC-10s), just that your description of an MD-11 would also accurately describe a DC-10.

Eric the differences are greatly reduced horizontal stab area !! rearwards c of g!!! (all for greater efficiency in "cruise) and differing standards of additional flight control software/computers/hardware.I'm not saying you didn't fly in an MD-11 (although KLM also operated DC-10s), just that your description of an MD-11 would also accurately describe a DC-10.
They mostly pile in when landing in difficult conditions, snap a wing off, roll over on their backs and burn.
Horrid aircraft, just waiting to trap even the most skilled/experienced of pilots IMO.
RIP.
An earlier disaster, Japan. Also fatal.

They do indeed seem to be pretty dodgy in certain landing situations and at least two have bounced on landing and flipped over.
