We were discussing where to go in 2010 and as we are heavily involved in decorating and refurbishment activities next year we won't be going abroad.

Instead we are going to have a series of short trips / breaks and go to some of the best restaurants in the UK. Apologies for formatting, copied from excel.

rather than going long distances just for a restaurant, why not go for a "gastro experience"?

oysters straight off the beds in Kent or Pas de Calais, visit a whisky distillery in Scotland, Brewery tours, etc

Maze remains my favourite.

Pope's Eye in W14 is best for steak (cash only, IIRC, and they only sell steak and chips).

FYI, O/P - Roast is good if you are in the vicinity, and Lawrence seems a nice bloke, but it's not worth a big detour. A quarter of a mile away are Pont de la Tour, Chophouse, Blueprint Cafe, and others of a similar quality.

It's good, but not 'Hit List' good.

if you're in the area St John is worth a try

also, if you book far enough in advance River Cottage HQ is really, really good fun

If you are in Nottingham then you can do worse. To be honest compared to the other restaurants on the list that I have been to, it is a very normal curry house, albeit nicely decorated.
If you are in London and fancy a posh indian restaurant then Amaya and Benares are two of my favourites.

st john is MUCH better, and personally I think st john bread & wine is MUCH better than the original branch
