possible diesel turbo failure

Could anyone tell me the best way of telling if a turbo is on it's way out or is just a bit on the noisy side ( if there is such a thing )
Reason I ask, I have a mitsubishi L200 4life 2.5td pickup, and it has a little turbo whine and bang on 3000rpm I can hear a faint high frequency rattle, not that loud, if the radio is on you can't hear it.
But I suspect it's the turbo bearing that is starting to make a noise.
Anyone have experience of diesel turbo failure and does it sound like I'm going to have to cough up for a new turbo ??
And guess what, it's only done 23,000 miles, but due to a service mixup by the former owner ( service was 1500 miles later than required ), mitsubishi will not backup the warranty.
Cheers.

If you can hear a whine it's not the turbo. A turbo makes a very high pitched whistling sound whilst spooling up, which climbs to almost inaudible frequencies when up to full boost. And they certainly shouldn't rattle. Have you tried having someone rev the engine whilst you listen under the bonnet? See if you can locate the source of the rattling.
