Nested Quote Suggestion

Whilst reading SP&L the other day, there was a thread (can't remember which, but it seems particularly prevalent in there) that had lots and lots of posts with lots and lots of nested quotes. The problem came from me wearing out my iPhone screen scrolling down.
What about having an optional feature whereby quotes automatically collapse to show the most recent, with a button or link to click if you want all the rest of the nested quotes?

As long as the original post for a particular nest is visible. Very often a thread may have more than one nest on the go at a time. If you can't distinguise between nests, it might get confusing.
The only downsides I can think of are when posters like to edit for accuracy the previous nest poster, or highlight part of the previous poster's text. So perhaps it could work if the first, the last and the next contributor to the nest were visible. That way you would only have a max of 3 post showing. And maybe only have CJ's idea kick in when a nest gets to, say, 5 replies to one particular post.
