Yes, the HUD works well in all weather conditions, day or night. The position of the projection on the windscreen can be adjusted - I have mine located so it's just above the line of the hood. I tend to use it all the time because it's so accurate (especially compared to a 300 mph speedo with minimal needle deflection). A quick glance is very easy because the display is close to line of sight and your eyes don't have to refocus from infinity up to the instruments and back again. The display shows speed and rpm at all times. There is an additional bar graph display which can show fuel/temp/oil etc. Definite step forward.
It shows speed only, tach only, speed and tach, speed tach and one auxilliary instrument from fuel/water/oil. Very easy to read, you don't have to take your eyes off the road yet it is unobtrusive and can be switched off if you wish. I usually switch mine off at the track and use the big round tacho instead !
You can also adjust the brightness to any level you like and it will maintain that level in proportion to any light coming in through the windscreen. Turn into the setting sun and it will get much brighter, switch on the car at night and it will dim the HUD accordingly to the correct relative brightness level. It works really well and thoroughly recommend it to anyone.
The HUD can be retrofitted to C5s that don't have one quite straightforwardly.

I tend to turn down the brightness when driving at night as I find it distracting, I only ever use the speed/tach screen. It was very useful at Elvington as when you get close to the 6400 rev limit the word SHIFT flashes in the top lefthand corner of the display. You have the ability to move the display up and down, but not side to side.
It would also be useful if they had a gun sight for pedestrians!!

So roughly how much does it cost to retrofit the HUD to a C5? (my dad has a '97 coupe) and how easy is it etc?
Cheers

I was very lucky because a friend of mine gave me the projector from his scrapped '01. On top of that you will need the HUD enabled instrument cluster from a late '99 onwards which I bought from a guy in the states for £200. Plus the control switch which will fit where your dad has a blanking plate at the moment. The whole thing took me 5 hrs from start to finish and that included cutting the hole in the top of the dash for the projector. Incidentally, even back in '97 GM must of had HUD in mind because when you take the dash out and flip it over there are lines where you need to cut. Everything is just plug and play. Paul
That question has been raised before on various other forums 5USA and it's probably true. All I can say is that all the guys that have done this mod before reckon there's hardly any difference.I've not taken mine out yet since I fitted it but it looked good in my garage. Like you say, maybe they all have them in the first place....who knows !!
