Snapped timing chain - 320cdi

My brother in law owns a Merc van fitted with the 320 diesel engine. The car is 2 years old (Oct '07) and has done 53k miles.
Last week he was driving at 40mph on the M25 near the tunnel when the car went into "limp home mode", and before he could find a suitable place to pull over the engine died.
Short version is, Merc have informed him that the timing chain snapped. The car is under warranty and Merc will do the repairs, but I was curious to know if anyone here has had a similar experience?

I spoken to BIL yesterday and he has a bit more info.
It was indeed the chain that broke, and no it did not snap at the primary link either - the links disintegrated at an arbitrary point in the chain.
Merc are saying they will start the repairs only when they can figure out why the chain snapped in the first place - at this stage they are not sure why it happened.
