Anyone know any/recommend any good CB Radios. After the 'base' station really, one that you stick under the dash and connect to your battery! No I'm not a cabby!
Troop of vehicles heading off down to yorkshire for a holiday (and various other things) and we're looking into inter-car comms which doesn't involve the use of mobile phones!
While your at it, what about antenna's???

One of my neighbours has a bloody great whip ariel attached to his house.
I would be more than happy for you to forcibly remove it for your own use.
You can get those cheapy radios from CarPhone Warehouse, I bought one with a money off voucher that was burning a whole in my pocket.

You need an external aerial to get decent reception between hills. Go for the full length whip on the roof and you can pretend to be either the Dukes of Hazzard or the Bandit as required. They do a magnetic mount which is good for a temporary fitment (unless you have a fibre-glass car).
Alternatively, Maplin are doing two-way radios for 39 quid which are apparently a bit more advanced than your 60s spec CB.

mounting any aerial wouldn't be a problem! I regularly have 6 or 7 magnetics mounts on my roof with coax cable streaming in the sunroof! (I have a mate into Military Monitoring!) It's the type of aerial!

As for CB's. I was looking for something that could be used to communicate between cars over a distance of maybe 40+ miles! I don';t think 2 ways have that kind of range!

There not CB's but 2 way radios rented by the truck firms they preceeded phones and are nation wide (a bit like the Dolphin telecom stuff) but fitted into the cabs similar to taxi radios and have to licenced etc basically forget them. CB's max legal power 4 watts 5 miles range max in ideal conditions.

To cut a long story short! He works for the Kilwinning depot of W H Malcolm (sp?) (You see there huge Blue Sided Artics running from Scotland to the likes of Dover, Folkstone and Weymouth!) He works a Machine in the quarry's and needs to talk to the office, other trucks, other machines etc. But when the drivers startd having a laugh they were told toi button it! So they all decided to buy CB's. He says he can sit in quarry near Irvine and talk to the Drivers in Greenock using this CB, about 30 miles away! I'll get the spec off him but I may be wrong!!!

4 watts is legal but you can get a power amp (burner) to increase this to 20 watts. Then if you don't like what somone is saying, you can talk right over the top of them... apparently! The lack of duplex communication is a bit of a pain if you are talking to a blabbermouth.

1980's... me 14 years old.... illegal AM/FM/SSB radio... illegal linear amplifiers..... illegal Sigma4 arial (the Cornetto looking one) on 30 foot of scafold in the back garden...... Mum and Dad pissed off with it all..... neighbours tellys wiped out when I keyed up....

I'm raiding the memory banks a bit now, but as a radio amateur I've used both CB and the more 'legitimate' bands. CB works on 28 Mhz, not too far away from an amateur radio band too. Therefore it's quite easy to get hold of a kilowatt amplifier, which if loaded into a dipole will happily overload the front end of any telly within a wide area ;-) If you configure the amp in the correct manner (overload the pre-amp stage) you can cause 'splatter' all over a wide range of frequencies from TV to emergency services radio etc. They'll all hear you talking like Kenny of Southpark. If they get hold of you, you'll probably end up the same way too.
Because of the nature of CB and 28 Mhz, it works by 'skip'. I.e. within a local area you will hear the signal and can chat to the locals, but when the atmospheric conditions are right, you will end up talking to truckers in the US clearer than talking to your mate in Milton Keynes.
