Thinking about a Nikon D90...

...with the 18-105 VR kit lens. Does this sound like a reasonable choice at that price point (~£750)?
This would be my first SLR, is there anything I need to consider getting with it? I've seen things like UV protection filters, I guess I could just Google what they're for specifically but I'm more concerned about whether there's anything else I'd then be missing.
Thanks

That should be more than enough to keep you going for a bit
UV filters are a personal thing; I ditched them a few years ago but others like them for protection.
First on your 'bits' list I'd say is a spare battery, then perhaps a Speedlight - but that's not really a stocking-filler thing. A decent card reader perhaps? Or maybe a bag to keep it all safe?

interesting that you mention an extra battery... any idea if the power consumption of the D90 is particularly high?

I'm sure the D90 is fine for power consumption, but... the hidden danger with a long-lasting battery is that you will take it for granted, and never charge it, and then one day you will be out somewhere and it's on 10%, and you want to use the camera a lot, and suddenly it's gone and you're screwed. Always be ready for the unexpected. With a second battery, you just reload and keep going. The elderly battery on my aged D70s lasts for ages and ages... and ages...
I bought that exact kit 5 months ago as a first DSLR and am thoroughly enjoying using it. The camera is a good bit more capable than I am at taking photos
Up to now, the only things that I have bought for it are a bag, skylight filter for protection and a circular polariser.
Use as big a memory card as you can - if you shoot RAW + fine JPEG then you are looking at 15-16MB per shot.
Next on the list is a lightweight tripod and a remote control (I enjoy doing night shots).
Longer term, a spare battery is certainly going to happen as I have nearly been caught short once already.
I am hoping that Santa is going to bring me the 70-300 VR lens prior to our trip to NZ in Feb - fingers crossed!

The camera is great, the battery consumption is about 1000 shots / charge but as said above always have a spare even if its a cheapo one as a backup. I use that lens as a walkabout on my D300s and have blown up mid zoom/mid aperture portrait shots to about flipchart size and its perfectly aceptable! A gem of a lens.
I also got a cheap fleabay replica battery grip for about £45 and it works great.
