It was called Der Grau Adler or similar and it was about a very rich German Industrialist who wanted to recapture the dog fights of WW2. He found a couple of basket case ME109s and rebuilt em, ring a bell with anyone?

I've read something like that - although it had an English title.

This must be it.

The plot synopsis matches the story I read.

It was rather good - if a little far fetched.

Is that the one where he then attacked US targets again? If so great story, read it about 10 years back

I thought I'd found a film of the book but it's even more interesting - see the trailer:

Jeez, I read 'Gray Eagles' years ago when it came out. I agree it was a tad far-fetched, what with ex-Luftwaffe aces strutting around Arizona wearing full dress uniform, mainlining Schnapps and saying 'Ja, Herr Oberleutnant' a lot before climbing into their Me109Gs and giving the yanks a proper pasting....

....in the 1980s.

1945 + 31 = 1976.
