It would be considered both normal and beneficial (in terms of search engine ranking) to use a redirect to anyone visiting the additional URLs to the standard URL.
e.g.
http://www.track-days.co.uk/ -> http://www.pistonheads.com/
By having the same content available at different URLs you are presenting duplicate content and are thus reducing your page rank.
This can also be addressed using 'link rel=canonical':
http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2009/02...

The penalty for using multiple URLs is an interesting on. Although I've read this a lot, it doesn't seem to have adversely affected PH's rankings despite having multiple URLs for many years.

It is a very tricky one for us to handle due to the points above.
We obviously don't want to do stuff that hinders our Google rankings, and in some areas of the site we do not appear as prominently on Google as we would like to (e.g. Breaking News or Car Reviews/Features). But I think there are other SEO tactics we can use to help this in the future.
But on the other hand our primary role is to make PistonHeads accessible for all and thus getting round company banned lists is useful for us as a lot of our traffic comes from people viewing in the daytime, and this is something we will keep doing.

It is useful for a single domain and sub domains under that domain, but it does not solve the multiple domain problem as Google will ignore the Canonical link element if the domain name in the link doesn't match the URL and mark them as abuse.RacingPete said:
