BBC News said:
Local authorities in England's most deprived areas have been given £40m to tackle long-term unemployment.

The cash will be shared by 61 authorities, and the government says up to 70,000 families will benefit.

Various projects could be funded including outreach programmes and the recruitment of job counsellors.

Communities Secretary John Denham said the cash would mean the jobless get the "helping hand they need... so they can start to stand on their own two feet".

He added: "We're determined to do more to help these families; they need to know they have not fallen through the net, or been written off."

...

He added: "Some people grow up not knowing what it means to work, where parents, grandparents and neighbours have never had jobs - these people are not destined never to work.

...
Really?! mad

FFS - it's really not that hard to figure out "what it means to work". You go and do something for someone for money, and you use said money to buy nice things. Like food. Or flat screen TVs. How hard can it be?

If I have to work to feed myself, why shouldn't they?

News like this is a polite reminder that the government of the day needs to be voted out!

Too many people, not enough jobs. NO amount of government bullst and spin is going to change this.

We have to have a benefits class, or we have to get rid of a load of people, OR we have to establish a serf class of people by cutting their benefits. How anti-communitarian?!?! That could never be allowed to happen.

Sadly, as a worker, you are destined to pay for the rest of this.

It would be good to admit that there are not enough jobs. That's what they need to do. Rather than obscuring the truth, they need to admit it and deal with it. But, I suppose you can always use it as a vote grabber.

Sounds fair to me. Here's £1000 cash in your pocket to spend on Lamberts and Sky HD. Just sign here to say you'll never claim again, will you?

Betcha they'd go for it...

their buying publicity for their campaign, there seriously needs to be some kind of statutory limit in place on government spending and what they can spend it on...

There are jobs but they require certain skills. Some of these long-term are a hopeless case as they will never get those skills, because they depend on the system, which Labour and previous governments have perpetuated and are happy to buy their votes. Remember the Morlocks in The Time Machine (H.G. Wells) who were conditioned by their environment. They are with us now.

That works out at £585 for each of the "70,000 families" helped. WOW. THis assumes ZERO cost of administration. So, after the cost of the public servants, it should work out at about £2 per family...

From history lessons as school, I seem to recall the terms "deserving poor" and "undeserving poor".

Surely these chavs would fall into the latter category, for which the treatment is NOT the hand-out of free money, but flogged through the streets until they have learned the errors of their work-shy ways?

I suppose the modern equivalent would simply to shoot them in the head and harvest their organs...if only.

A decent set of transplant-grade organs are worth a good few grand, more if the blood type etc. details are rare! Allegedly. wink
