I took my prized possesion out Saturday and after 10 mins the clutch started to slip at peak torque , spoke to Peninsula and Richard mentioned that there is a core plug at the rear of the block that can commonly drip oil onto the clutch , has anyone come across a similar problem ? what did you do , if your clutch was replaced where did you get it from (if you replaced it yourself), thanks.

I've just had exactly the same symptoms on my '96 Chimaera 500. There was no warning of deterioration prior to it starting to go. - If you put the boot down in top gear you just spin the clutch. Very annoying when you are being hounded by an Escort Cossie. (Made his day though when I had to pull over!).

Required a new clutch, although oil leakage wasn't considered. Cost £400 for the part but was supplied with the service. I think it's about another 5 hours labour on top to do a clutch.(Mr.Clutch reckoned they could do it all for about £550 but I've no idea whether they're recommended for TVRs).

My car's done 51k miles and that was the original clutch. Apparently that's very good wear for a 500.

Oh yes, I was also advised NOT to spin the clutch - it burns out the flywheel or something! Therefore get it seen to soon.

Hope this helps.

I had the same problem on my 97 500 a year back. The car had done about 28K, but I was told that anything up to 25K was good going.
One TVR dealer old me that it wouldn't be covered under my warantee, but another had a more customer friendly approach. A worn clutch is not covered by a warantee, but if an oil seal had broken and contaminated the clutch then that might well be covered. Funnily enough, with a suitable bit of phrasing, that is exactly what my problem turned out to be - a dodgy oil seal. Most of the parts were covered and all the labour so the end bill to me was much more palatable.

Christ. Sounds like I should be worried at 39k miles then?

44k and mine is still going strong. Needed a new master cylinder a year ago though.

102,000 still going, long travel on the pedal now but still there.
Plan to finish it on the next track day , have her changed and ready the following week for Croft.
