The new Chip & PIN cards now being rolled out are thankfully compatible with the systems overseas, so it'd be advisable for anyone going over to Le Mans to ask your bank to upgrade your card/s ready for the trip.

From what I can gather, even if you've got a chipped card already you need to get a new one with the PIN on it.

So no more sleeping in your car waiting for a petrol station to open then

They have a great system in Holland which uses the chip on the card to store "cash" (not sure if that is what is being rolled out over here) so you can use your cash card for parking meters etc and just draw off the money for the parking, no need to empty the machines of cash, no need to carry cash etc - wish they would bring it out over here!! Also you can top up the cash part of the card at banks and such places, you need your pin number and it just moves the money from your bank aco to the chip on the card

Sounds similar to what we have here in Luxembourg... It's called minicash... May well be the same system... And yes, it's excellent...
