are they safe to eat from? if not can i coat them in something so that i can?

i really fancy putting together my own dinner service from naff elvis/diana type stuff from ebay.

I have the 'Spitfire Coming Home' plate, and it says on the back:

'Art object, precious metal pigments may be toxic, do not use for eating or serving food'.

is that gold paint?

those are out of the question then, but how about just normal painted ones?

This is just a colour print of a painting, not gold or silver. Hence I suppose the issue is that pigments and glaze etc that they use are not 'food standard'.

However perhaps it's just one of those back-covering nanny-state statements and you may be fine, I dont know.
