Chrysler can't use the Viper name in the UK

They have to call the new Viper the SRT-10 in the UK to avoid legal action by some two bit poxy kit car manufacturer who no doubt stole the name in the first place. Dumbasses!

Surely the right to use the name should go to the company who used it first, wherever it was first used.

Perhaps I should design a Ford Fiesta based kit car and call it the Muira just in case Lamborghini get any ideas about re-using that one.

Yeah, this was posted before (with not much information).

So if the Viper name can't be used in the UK, does this indicate that Dodge were thinking about bringing the car over here? I suppose this is going to deter them from doing so, though. I wouldn't like the car to be called SRT-10 - Viper sounds awesome. Oh, and I read in The Times last week that the car will be sold for 50KGBP - bargain.

I do agree though, the first user of a name should be allowed to use that name, regardless of location. A kit car maker must be small - Dodge/DC must be a lot bigger in size - surely Dodge/DC can scare them off and get the rights which they deserve?

Edited to say that when I do a search for a company, I find lots of smaller companies using the same name - even in the UK.

I had already heard this but the other school of thought is that Dodge have been using the name since 92 and therefore may already have some history of this name.

Also if it came down to whose wallet was the largest should legal action occur, who do you think would win?

I bet they have already tried to buy it back or gone through their solicitors and realilse they cant win but they should still and try and retain their name, might frighten a small company into submission

IM VERY PLEASED!!Why you may ask?Well can i just say that Chrysler U.K. are a bunch of w******s and only seem to want to cream of the Vipers success when it suits them.The Viper in the USA has been a major reason behind the success of the company in the last 10 years and they have built on this with the P.T and Crossfire,the sooner CHRYSLER U.K wake up to this the better,the Viper realy has put the company on the map and when they say...."were gonna build the X,Y OR Z people believe them coz of the Viper(the car everyone said would never be built!)Viper and the team building it created within the company has shaped it into the way it is today and i think it is just plane ignorance (look at the way the recall was handled!) form the U.K part of Chrysler,and so YES...im happy to see that they can,t bad it as a Viper and quite frankley they don,t deserve to.Another reason why 1. I will not be taking my Viper to the "Chrysler Brooklands Day"(Lets show of this product when it suits us) and 2. If i feel that Chrysler U.K are trying to take over the stand at Goodwood then i won,t be there either.The way they have treated my recall work was a bloody disgrace and i will not be a hipocrite and rub shoulders with them......sorry of my spelling....top much red wine again,but i mean what i say!Chrysler U.K if your reading this ...GLAD YOU LOST THE VIPER NAME!!!!!!!

Only one small point Tom the Chrysler day at Brooklands is nothing to do with Chrysler the motor manufacturer but mearly a day when all the Motorclubs who support the mark meet together and talk CARS

This all seems to stem from the announcement at the Detroit Show that they are going to launch the Dodge brand in Europe and the UK. The guy made me laugh when he was saying "Do you know it nearly made us cry having to call the car the Chrysler Viper in Europe as it's such sacrilege" or words to that effect. Real bummer to launch Dodge and be denied the use of "Viper". Ha ha. Should call it the Dodge Asp because they don't know their Asp from their elbow.

Personally, I don't get this registering of a name that already exists. Does that mean we can't call a snake a viper without infringing someone's copyright. It's different for made-up names like Lexus. Who cares if there was a Dodge Viper, Nissan Viper and Jaguar Viper as long as you know which car you want.
