Anyone looking for a long lens? How about 650-1300mm f8-16! With a 1.6x crop factor that is 1040-2080mm!
Just found this on eBay when looking at M42 lenses:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/OPTEKA-f-650-1300mm-F-8-16-M...
It is only £60 with P&P at the moment!

Isn't this bigger than that massive Canon lens? (I don't mean the one with the chair attached!)

Mods: this is not advertising, it is not my auction and I thought it would be of interest!

That certainly looks impressive - you could stick a Canon logo on it and then strut around at airshows pretending it was worth £6,000...

I bet that's softer than an 18-55 kit lens covered in butter.

I think these lenses are less than £300 new! Just imagine trying to manually focus it at 1300mm F16, with the slightest lens movement being so massively magnified. Not much use for anything that's likely to move!

I had a chat to a guy that was using an Opteka lens in a bird hide. It had a push/pull zoom and was in the 100-400mm sort of range. He admitted that the IQ was rubbish, but was the only large telephoto he could afford. He showed me some bird prints he'd done with it. His comment about IQ was definitely true!

What is the point in having the range if there's no quality? Would rather not bother

Twitchers would probably take the view that a low quality shot of a Siberian Blue-legged Sparrowfinch is much better than no shot at all - and for only £60. They won't say 'There's a bit of CA in that', they'll say 'Wow, a Siberian Blue-legged Sparrowfinch!'

Or they might have to say 'Wow, it's either a Siberian Blue-legged Sparrowfinch or a Siberian Yellow-legged Sparrowfinch with chromatic aberration around its legs'!

Seriously though, the guy I spoke to knew his Opteka limitations and was willing to accept them. There was no way he could come anywhere near affording "quality" glass, but was pleased to be getting a photographed record of his "finds".
