Restrants in london

A mate is going to be spending some time in London next month and has asked if I can recommend some good restaurant.
However as it's been about 8 years since vie lived there most of the places I usually will have gone to have probably closed/changed/ect etc plus I tend to be east when i'm down.

I've already recommended Lahore kebab house and Belgos and wondered what you lot recommend.
I think there staying in County Hall/Westminster so places round there and more central.

bar shu in Soho for chinese (if he likes chilli, its spicy)
ten ten tei in soho for sushi
green and red in east lonon for proper mexican
the list is kind of endless

Skylon in the Festival Hall
PingPongDimSum - bit touristy, and not in any way authentic, but a laugh. Festival hall again.
Canteen for pies etc
The Anchor and Hope on the Cut. Get there early as there is no booking, but fantastic gastropub.
Baltic just round the corner from Southwark tube, interesting Eastern European stuff

If you head over to London Bridge way you have a lot of choice around Borough Market. Brindisia Tapas, Roast.

I won't name and shame here but just had a weekend being ripped off at a few of London's better known restaurants.

One famous place on the Kings Road where after I had to have a kebab afterwards because their idea of their 'famous Sunday lunch' was one slice of beef, 4 roast potatoes, 2 carrots and 2 very dry Aunt Bessies type Yorkshires. Mrs 4C ordered a side of green beans and the waiter pointed out her duck came with savoy cabbage (yes hidden underneath the duck), £3 for a small diet coke and I became grey waiting for service. Same the day before at another well known fish restaurant in the West End: tiny portions (how can they charge £5.25p for six slics of courgette?) their 'famous fish pie' I could have knocked up in 10 minutes and then they add a £2 'cover charge' and a 12.5% service charge. Overall, 2 x 2 lunches x 2 courses, no drinks except water and 2 cokes: £150.

Thanks God for the kebab shop on Kings Cross Road and now back to Yorkshire prices/service.

Yes, sadly the "tourist" places can be awful on both service and price. Not that representative of London as a whole, but it is a shame nonetheless.

There are some fantastic Turkish places around Green Lanes and Dalston, bit of a trek but worth it. Great quality and cheap.

If you were interested in Yorkshire prices, you should have gone to the Cardinal round the back of Westminster Abbey. A Sam Smiths pub, and they have the same price in all pubs, regardless of location Love it !

I used to live and work in Sheffield, but came down to the City regularly. Back in the days before Borough Market became trendy, we used to go over the river to the Market Porter. Beer and food was cheaper there then in the pubs nearer the Sheffield office ! Very much the exception though.

The Market Porter is a bit of a joke now. It's just for City workers waiting having a few pints before jumping on the train back to Kent during the week and clueless tourists on the weekends. Didn't stop me having my first date with the OH there a few years back though
